THE TULIA (Swisher County) HERALD
PAGE THREE
"Just One Recruit" is beginning to
pick-up. There are seven new volun-
teers for the month of November.
John and Willie Butler, and Dorotha
Nell from Happy, Ed Workman,
Laveme Mullin, Lottie Melton and
Mary Edwards from Tulia, are new
volunteers.
"We make a living by what we get,
but we make a life by what we give."
January we will have new hourly
reporting forms because of our revised
computer program. You will still
report volunteer hours through your
volunteer stations. Your signature and
that of the station coordinator are still
required.
The volunteer hours not under a
station will still be reported on a
monthly sheet but you will not report
the number of hours on the dates of
the calendar as you have in the past.
There will be a smaller calendar
and you can still keep up with your
dates when you volunteer. Only the
month is important now, but the day
of the month you volunteered is no
longer required.
You will list the total number of
hours beside the station where you
volunteered. As always your signature
and that of your spouse are required
on separate sheets. Thcr are always
extra time sheets at the RS VP office.
Feme and Murray Vise prepared
their annual Christmas breakfast for
all of the staff of the Senior Citizens
and RS VP. Everyone arrived at 7 a.m
to a beautiful display of Christmas
lights and the Star of Bethlehem
mounted above the front door of the
Vise home.
There were red poinsettias and
greenery arranged on the lattice work
of the porch. All of the trees and
shrubs were decorated with lights.
Whata beautiful sight it was to see.
Peaceful would best describe the
scene at the Vise home. Inside the
house the Christmas tree was
decorated Victorian style with very
soft flowing colors.
Angels, Christmas balls and many
other attractive ornaments adorned
the tree. Christmas songs were heard
in the background while the guests
served themselves from a lovely
buffet.
A scrumptious meal of egg and
sausage casserole, sausage balls,
biscuits, fresh fruit, cinnamon rolls,
lemon blueberry cake slices, jelly
filled pastries, orange juice and coffee
was enjoyed by 10 very hungry guests.
Christmas packages were opened
and secret pals revealed. Everyone
had a great time. Merry Christmas,
Feme and Murry Vise.
If you didn’t attend the Christmas
parade you missed out!
Please turn in your "Just One"
recruit. November and other hours
are due Dec. 5. Please don't forget
your hours.

Kicks Off Again
The Tulia Fire Department
desperately needs help to provide
great service.
Funds are depleted by the purchase
of a new water truck.
The truck was a one time
opportunity. It was a terrific bargain
on equipment the department
desperatly needed, the department
says.
Market price for similar equipment
would be over $70,000 new. The
department paid $8,750 for the
military surplus truck.
Almost every town that could afford
it bought one. "People don’t realize
the cost of equipment for firefighting.
Even the gloves are expensive at over
$30 a pair," says Mike Williams. "It
costs over $1,200 to equip one man
with personal gear."
James Williams says, "I think it is
very noble that the men are willing to
give of their help the community.
They come out at night, and in all
kinds of weather. And when there is
appearance of arson they have to
guard the site until a fire marshal
arrives. They also do rescue work
when there is a bad car wreck."
James Williams continues, "I
believe the Fire Department is the
most essential of the volunteer
organizations in town,. Just suppose
we had a fire and nobody came?"
James and Wanda Williams' "Fill
The Boot" campaign is five or six
years old. The boot campaign has
provided over $700 to the Fire
Department over the years.
The Williams’provide a spectacular
sight with over 25,000 lights on the
house and yard.
All they ask is recognition for the
Fire Department through donations
to the booL
Wayne Nevins, fire chief, says,
"The Fire Department appreciates the
Williams and those who view the
display and donate to the boot.
"We have had good community
support over the years.
"This year our finances are
especially tight. We need money to
prepare die tanker. Donations help
because we are more able to meet the
needs of the community for fire
fighting service and the firefighter's
needs for personal safety.
"A Christmas gift to the fire
department is one of the best ways I
can think of to say 'Thank You' to the
firefighters," says Nevins.
