Memories
Continued from Page One
had Christmas religious scenes at each
comer of the block, with lights all in
white and my Christmas spirit came
back.
Wc didn’t stop at a motel for the
night. Finances prohibited that. Wc
went straight into Phoenix.
Phoenix weather was beautiful. It
was two days before Christmas and
wc visited with friends and relatives
both days.
Santa was bringing Diana a Horse-
man baby doll purchased in Tulia from
the Jewel Tea man. Buy so much, get
the doll on points for dollars spent for
Jewel Tea merchandise.
The other nieces were all getting
walking dolls. Our little girl was really
wanting a walking doll too, and she
had visited Santa at a store and told
him about wanting a walking doll. But
they were expensive dolls, too high in
price for us.
Christmas Eve downtown Phoenix
was all lit up and wc were riding down
the streets of the city looking at the
lights and the store window decora-
tions.
We noticed Skaggs Drugs window
had a big sign, all dolls 2/3 off selling
price. It was an answer to a prayer, wc
could purchase a walking doll!
All day Christmas the little girls
walked their dolls.
Everybody was at Dewey's folks
home for dinner and what a feast.
Wc had to leave early the next day.
The weather had cleared in New
Mexico so we stopped to have
Christmas a day late with my folks.
I remember the outstanding Sun-
day at church in Albuquerque. An
orphanage for boys had a large boys’
choir that sang for the Sunday services.
The Christmas carols the boys sang
that Sunday completed the Christmas
spirit.
The trip back to Tulia went fast.
There was lots of snow at the sides of

Tulia looked good to us. We were
glad to get back. i
Our neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Sarche, were there to meet us.
But then we got bad news.
The pipes under the kitchen sink
busted. Mr. Sarchet saw water run-
ning out our back door. He was our
hero. He fixed the pipes, put in new
cabinet boards under the sink, cleaned
up the mess and we were speechless
when we saw all he had done.
What a wonderful Christmas gift
those loving neighbors gave us. They
knew we didn't know how hard win-
ters in the Panhandle could be, and
they had carefully watched our little
house after the snow storm.
Dewey and I loved the Sarchet
family. They were our example of
Tulia people and friendships. They
became our second family.
It was a memorable Christmas. One
wc have never forgotten.
