Tulia Retired Teachers Hear
About An English Christmas
Randalls Celebrate 50th
Anniversary In Florida
Mr. and Mrs. John Randall celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in
Orlando, Fla. Their son, Jeff, and his wife, Kathcc, met them there.
John Randall married the former Ellen Pence on Dec. 7, 1945 in Fort
Wayne, Ind.
He retired from the U. S. Air Force and they have lived in Tulia since
1974.
The Randalls have two grandsons, Jason and Jeremy, who attend the
University of Maryland.
Tulia Retired Teachers met at the
Senior Citizen Building for lunch on
Dec. 4, 1995. Winnie Bartley
introduced Joan Hutto who in her
own charming way told them about
her childhood experiences with
traditional Christmas celebrations in
High Wycombe, Buckingshire,
England. Most of her memories were
from early childhood as World War
II was in progress later on.
There always was the traditional
Christmas pudding which was started
a few weeks before Christmas adding
pounds of dried fruit. Members of the
family took their turns stirring the
pudding on Saturday before
Christmas, making a wish as they
stirred. One pudding was always
saved for New Year's Day. The
pudding was restcamed and served
with hot custard.
For Christmas Day tea, Joan's
mother always made a fruit cake into
which a few silver sixpence were
dropped. Those lucky enough to get a
sixpence kept it for good luck.
On Christmas Eve stockings were
hung on the mantel. The Christmas
tree was erected and decorated with
Health Chairperson Hazel Douglas
reported on a • new treatment for
prostate cancer and for osteoporosis.
Both of them are proving helpful.
The next meeting will be Jan. 8
with the informative and protective
services committee in charge,
edible ornaments which were eaten
one per day for each family member.
It lasted until after New Year's Day.
A large Christmas dinner for the
immediate family consisted partially
of roasted hen with sage dressing and
roasted pork. Vegetables like
broccoli, brusscl sprouts, and turnips
were grown all year long.
English children went to public
school from age four to 14. Summer
holidays were only four weeks in
length. Comprehensive, difficult tests
were given in August and December
as children became fourteen years of
age. Mastery of the test determined
whether they remained in school or
went to work.
Following the program, Mrs.
Bartley, president, called for
committee reports. Pat Bright, public
relations chairperson, suggested that
a telephone call to members prior to
meeting date might be helpful.
