Paul R. Hempfling, Sr. — CCA
We welcome two new members
to our group this month whose
names were sent in by Paul
Hempfling, Sr. (Div Tns) and
Arthur Gaddis (Div Hq/IG).
Paul in his letter relates that he
had received a letter from Captain
William McCarthy who lives in
Magnolia, Mass. and that this was
the first contact made between
them since his discharge. Division
Trains Personnel will remember
that Captain McCarthy was Com-
pany Commander of Division
Trains Headquarters Co. The
Captain is very happy to join us
and expressed interest in attend-
ing the Nashville reunion in July
and seeing some of his old friends.
Our QM Section was attached to
Division Trains overseas and he
was also our Company CO. He
was a fine officer and I can never
remember seeing him without
that pleasent smile on his face.
Art sends dues in as a Christ-
mas gift to enroll Paul Burkit who
makes his home in Logansport,
Indiana. Paul was our First Sgt.
of the Division Service Co. that
was later phased out with the T/O
change. I'm sure many of the
original personnel will recall Paul
and could never forget after roll
call on those dark dingy mornings
in Tennessee and before dismissal
for the messhall and elbows rou-
tine, how he would chew us out
for any short-comings of the
previous night such as too much
noise after lights out and the
noisy crap games that went on in
the second floor non-com rooms.
Paul didn't remain too long. After
the first of that new year, he went
off to Field Artillery Officer's
Candidate School in Fort Sill,
Oklahoma and nothing more was
ever heard from him.
The Division Headquarters
Group along with all the other

members of our great organiza-
tion extend a big welcome to Bill
and Paul and our sincere hope
that this will be the beginning of a
lasting membership for many
years to come.
From St. Paul, Minn, comes
dues from Don Mclntyre (Divarty)
and a note stating not too much
news to report from the Twin
Cities except that the temper-
ature is getting down nearer to
zero and that as of his writing
(Dec. 8th) no snow as yet. He
closes, however winter is very
young and we can expect plenty
of the white stuff before long.
(Don ... Didn't I see on television
where you people in that area got
buried but good just prior to
Christmas?????)
Tom Cukas (Div Hq/AG) sends
dues and booster from Pitcairn,
PA. In an accompanying note,
Tom tells us that the information
provided by "Whitey" Whitefield
regarding the death of Captain
Milton Sadowsky that appeared in
the December HCN was surpris-
ing. Tom served with the Division
AG Classification unit with Cpl.
Charles Lee and Sgt. Emil Torok
under the Captain. He further
adds that Captain Sadowsky oper-
ated an appliance retail outlet at a
shopping center east of Pitts-
burgh on Route #30 after return-
ing home and thereafter lost his
whereabouts as he sold the estab-
lishment. Tom closes with 'his
best to all'.
Walt LanFranconi (Div Hq/
SSO) sends dues from Barre, VT
and apologizes for being tardy as
he has been travelling. Hellcats
who followed the Division base-
ball team will remember that
Walt was the number one pitcher
on Jimmie Reese's pitching staff.
And while dropping Jimmie's
name, I have to mention that
Jimmie's name recently popped
up in our Sunday New York News
in a sports trivia question and
answer column. Someone wrote in
and asked "Who were the men
who played third base for the
New York Yankees during the
BABE RUTH era"? The answer:
The Babe played from 1920
through 1934. The list included
Jimmie as having played the
position along with 25 other
names.
My thanks to Paul Hempfling,
Sr. for remembering me with a
beautiful Christmas card and note
wishing us a Happy Holiday Sea-
son and bright New Year. He also
writes that he enjoyed the re-
union in St. Louis and is looking
forward to Nashville. He is keep-
ing busy researching hii family
histories and finds it very inter-
esting. Also has become a Cam-
bridge Plan Counselor that takes
some of this time. Paul is trying
to get down to his 1945 weight
EUROPEAN TOUR - Down The Romantic Road
At the Midwest Chapter Meeting last
year, Clint Seitz, showed Forrest Smith a
booklet called the Romatic Road, which
outlines a German tour south from Wurz-
burg to the Austrian border. It is second
only to the Rhine River tour, and is almost
identical to the route taken by the 12th
Armored Division.
Forrest thought so much of the tour
that he asked the Executive Council (at the
last St. Louis Reunion) for permission to
organize a tour back to Germany in 1983,
and trace the route of the 12th along t|ie
romantic road.
After several meetings with his travel
agent, Forrest Smith is submitting the
following itinerary to the membership, and
along with the tour is trying to make
arrangements for a meeting with some of
the German army associations that oppos-
ed us in one of the cities along the tour (he
is awaiting word from a Dr. Josef Trichen
in Munster on the possibility of the
meeting, and will have more details in the
March issue of Hellcat News).
