users for their co-operation in the
matter of saving water during the
period of drouth and excessive
heat. There have been compara-
tively few complaints and water

mum, thus enabling the water de-
partment to build up a reserve in
Delbert Childress, son of Mrs.
F M. Childress, underwent sur-
gery on his right leg, Friday in the
Veterans Hospital in McKinney.
The new surgery and placing of
the limb in a cast is believed to be
the final operation necessary to
correct serious injuries sustained
some months ago in a traffic ac-
cident which took place at No-
cona. His mother attended his bed-
side during the week-end.

Lions Hear Talk
on Fire Safety
Ben F. Van Pelt Jr., Wichita
Falls fire marshal, was the featur-
ed -speaker on the program, Thurs-
day, for the noon luncheon session
of the Electra Lions Club at the
White Rose Club Room. Mr. Van
Pelt told of the most numerous
causes of fires and how to pre-
vent fires. He gave some interest-
ing demonstrations on the sub-
ject.
Vice president, Paul Jones, pre-
sided over the opening exercises
and the business session. Lion
Bryan Bingham, who took Justin
Dennis Ethridge, a protege of the
club, to the Lions Crippled Chil-
drens’ Camp near Kerrville, gave
a report on his trip. He described
the camp and its facilities for
recreation and said that the camp
will not only be an asset to the
Lions International organization
but an institution in which all
citizens of Texas will take great
pride in the future.
It was announced that Lion B.
L. Stevenson will go after the
youth and return him to his home
in Electra on conclusion of the
two-week stay in the camp.

tend the annual Southwestern
Short Course for Chamber of Com-
merce managers and secretaries,
in Dallas next wook The course is
sponsored by the United States
Chamber of Commerce and is
planned to cover such problems as
come up m the average commun-
ity and to co-ordinate work for
civic betterment of the southwest.
Mrs. Butler will accompany her

Commerce provided refreshments.
Street Topping
Now Under Vvay
A new asphalt distributor has
been purchased by' the city com-
mission for use by the street de-
partment. Work is already under
way on several blocks of streets
which had been previously graded
and graveled in preparation for
the hard-surfacing.
It was announced at Monday's
meeting of th commission that
owners of property adjacent to
1he streets to be "topped” will be
asked to pay material cost prices
for such improvements.

Pet Parade will be staged July' 31.

has been sponsored under the di-
rection of the Electra Chamber of
Commerce.
Cash prizes will be offered for
the most unusual pet and show
tickets w'ill be given to all who
enter a pet in this unique parade.

skunk, incidentally be sure that he

parade. With just an ordinary pet

New Principal
Junior High
Joe Leonard who has been a
member of the faculty of Electra
High School during the past four
years was elected principal of the
Waggoner Junior High School,
Monday, in the regular meeting of
the board of education. Mr. Leo-
nard will take the place vacated
by Carl C. Hathaway who resigned
two weeks ago.
Mr Leonard received his BA de-
gree from Texas Wesleyan College
Fort Worth and his MA degree
from Texas Christian University
in Fort Worth.
He is married and he and his
wife are active in educational and
social affairs of this city. They

Mrs. Melvin Rogers, 26 old Gra-
ham woman, was stricken with ill-
ness Friday night, a few' hours af-
ter arriving at the home of a sis-
ter. Mrs. M C. Disekcr. Her case
was tentatively diagnosed as polio
by- Dr J G Thompson and the
diagnosis was confirmed at the
Wichita Genoril Hospital where
she was i-ik.-n foi treatment. Late
lepoUs indicate 1 le disease was in
mild form and the patient is ex-
pected to return to her home in
Graham during the week-end.
Mrs Rogers is a sister of Mrs

that Cathie Deuschele, daughter

Force flying training directly

quarters, Washington, D. C. re-
cently announced that a college
education was no longer an entr-
ance requirement for Aircraft Ob-
server training in the Aviation
Cadet program.
Any young man who is between
the ages of 19 and 26’j, single, a
high school giaduate. and in good
physical and mental health can
now apply for Aircraft Observer
training. Applicants may have
20 50 vision if corrected to 20;20
with glasses.
An applicant is under no obli-
gation if he takes the qualifying
tests. He does not enter the Air
Force until he is found fully qual-
ified for Observer training and
actually desires to en'er the pro-
gram
