The second annual observance
of National Secretaries’ Week,
designated to honor “The Amer-
ican Secretary . The First Lady
of Business,” was officially set for
May 24-30 at a meeting in the
office of Sinclair Weeks, Secretary
of Commerce in Washington.
Wednesday, May 27, was set as
National Secretaries’ Day.
Attending the meeting with
Secretary Weeks were C. King
Woodbridge, of New York, chair-
man of the National Secretaries’
Week Council and president of
Dictaphone Corporation, and Mrs.
Mary H. Barrett, of Pittsburgh,
Pa., co-chairman of the National
Secretaries’ Week Council and
president of the National Secre-
taries Association.
Keynote for 1953 is stated on a
scroll entitled, “A Tribute To The
American Secretary.”

Washington, D. C., with C. King Woodbridge,-chairman of the Na-
tional Secretaries’ Week Council and president of Dictaphone
Corporation, and Mrs. Mary H. Barrett, co-chairman of the Council
and president of the National Secretaries Association, to officially
launch the second annual National Secretaries’ Week. “A Tribute

profession,” the tribute says.
Frequently, the efforts of these
skilled office workers are taken
for granted. Their many contribu-
tions to the nation's progress arc
unsung. To honor the secretaries
already doing their jobs with dili-
gence, and to' encourage others
into entering this worthy career,
it is essential that rightful recog-
nition be given.”
The concept of a designated
week during which secretaries
would receive national recognition
for their indispensable contribu-
tion originated last year with Mr.
Woodbridge.
“There are now,” says Mr.
Woodbridge, “approximately 5,-
000,000 secretaries in the United
States, but there are still more
secretarial jobs than there are
secretaries. The Council is keenly
interested in nation-wide observ-
ance to give secretaries greater
pride in their work and to en-
courage girls to take up secre-
tarial work as a career.”

From where I sit, it always

folks who would deny me a tem-
perate glass of beer without a
moment’s thought. They wouldn’t
want me to interfere with their
personal preferences for, say, but-
termilk. It’s a good idea to think
twice before you “spell out” rules
for your neighbor.
PTA Gets Stung by a "Bee"
The local PTA is feeling sheep-
ish today. Seems they complained
the youngsters weren’t learning
enough. Said they-couldn’t even
spell. So the kids challenged them
to a spelling bee.
“I was captain of the PTA’ers,”
“Doc” Brown told me. “Both
teams made the first round just
fine. But on the second round
Speedy Taylor went down on
‘efficiency.* Then his boy Chip,
who happened to be next on the
school team, rattled it right off.
From then on it was murder!”
