deadline passed without a reponse from Army Secretary How-
ard Callaway to their request for permission to enter White
Sands Missile Range to locate the fabled Victoria Peak treasure.
Gov. Bruce King, Atty. Gen. David Norvell and Land Com-
missioner Alex Armijo Thursday reiterated their request to
Callaway for permission to go onto the range to try to locate
the reported treasure. They had asked for a response by 9
a.m. Monday.
$22.2 billion arms bill
advances to SenateWASHINGTON (4) - A $22.2
billion authorization for weap-
ons, military research and re-
lated expenditures passed the
House Monday by a 305 to 38
vote and was sent to the Sen-
ate.
The bill is a compromise
between measures approved
earlier by both chambers.
It limits military assistance
to South Vietnam to $1 billion.
It also sets active duty mili-
tary strength at 2,149,300, a
slight reduction from the fig-
ure recommended by the ad-
ministration.
Noncombat military com-
ponents in Europe would have
to be reduced by 18,000 within
two years, with 6,000 of thereduction to be made by June
