THE TUFTS CRITERION, JULY, 1974U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan, D-Tex., is congratulated by Tufts Presi-
dent Burton C. Hallowell while Bernard W. Harleston, dean of the
faculty of arts and sciences, adjusts the hood, symbol of an honorary
doctor of laws degree. Rep. Jordan, the university's 1973 commence-
ment speaker, was awarded the honorary degree March 28. She is the
first black woman to serve in Congress from the old confederacy since
