FORWARD TIMES
July 13, 1974Dr. Freeman
Faces A RoastHOUSTON, TEXAS -- When
college students "light a fire"
under a college administrator, it
usually means trouble for the
poor prof. Not so, for Thomas F.
Freeman, director of Continuing
Education at TSU. Dr. Freeman
will be roasted--and toasted--by
his students; all members and
alumni of Sigma Pi Alpha
Forensic and Dialectical
Symposium. It will happen at
7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 20 in
the La Fontaine Room of the
Warwick Hotel.
Dr. Freeman has been adviser
to Sigma Pi Alpha, and coach of
the debate team, since joining
the TSU faculty in 1949. He has
also sponsored the Alpha Kappa
Mu Honor Society, and Alpha Mu
Omega Philosophical Society
throughout his 25 years on the
Houston campus; all in addition
to his responsibilities as a
University employee.
"DOC", AS HIS STUDENTS
affectionately call him, has
served TSU in a variety of
capacities: Head of the
Philosophy Department,
Professor of Psychology and
Guidance, Assistant Dean of the
College of Arts and Sciences,
Director of the Model Cities
Resident Training Center, and
Director of Continuing
Education and Weekend College.
He is also pastor of Mt. Horem
Baptist Church and a Visiting
Lecturer in the Department of
Religious Studies at Rice
University.
As mentor of the debate team,
Dr. Freeman carried his
charges into "big league"
competition--against teams
from Harvard, Yale, and the Big
Ten Schools. They seldom--if
ever--came home without a
trophy. From his debate team
have come noted orators andoutstanding citizens. Among
them: Congresswoman Barbara
Jordan; Judge Andrew L.
Jefferson; Assistant U.S. At-
torney, Carl Walker; TV per-
sonality, Alma Newsom; TSU
Law School Dean, Otis
King; Baptist Ministers, M.M.
Malone and M.L. Price; Rev.
Earl Allen, Founder of HOPE
Development, Inc.; and
Prentiss M. Moore, president of
Roxbury, Massachusetts'
University Without Walls, to
name a few.([
