Austin are being added
to a growing list o f
students recommended
to receive newly creat-
ed Achievement sch-
olarships at The' Univ-
ersity of Texas.
According to Dr.
Robert L. Marion, as-
sistant to the Vice presi-
dent, 58 students now
are under consideration
by U. T. Austin Presi-
dent Stephen H. 'Spurr,
with more awaiting re-
view.
Dr. Marion heads a
17-member task force
designated by the UTSystem Board of Regents
to administer the $400,
000 program which
seeks to attract more
Black and Chicano stu-
dents to UT Austin.
The task force is
made up of Black, Chi-
cano and Anglo repre-
sentatives of the Dean
of Students Office, Eth-
nic Student Services,
Student Financial Aids,
Admissions and Records
and the Office of Insti-
tutional Studies.
Eligible students can
receive a minimum of
$1,000 a year during
their four years at the
University, and when ne-
cessary additional funds
will be provided to take
care of clothing costs,
medical attention and tu-
torial assistance.Dr. Marion explained
that the task force is
seeking students who are
either in the top quar-
ter of their class or
who have strong poten-
tial and demonstrated
leadership abilities.
"B that we mean,
that although some of
the students are in the
op quarter, we are not
turning away students
whose academic or lead-
ership process has suf-
fered because of em-
ployment or other fac-
tors," says Dr. Marion.
Representatives of
the Office of Student Fin-
ancial Aids, the Admis -
sions Office and other
University student offi-
ces have visited morethan 20 high schools in
target areas suggested
by the Texas Education
Agency because of high
minority populations.
Word of the Achievement
Scholarship Program
also has been spread
among Texas high sch-
ool counselors andprin-
cipals and to commun-
ity leaders, urging them
to recommend students.
More than 400 ap-
plications have been re-
ceived thus far, said
Dr. Marion.
