When the curtain
went down Tuesday night
on the impeachment
drama, three blacks
were among the 38 mem-
bers of the House Judi-
ciary Committee which
had leveled three im-
peachment charges a -
gainst President Nixon,
ending a week's probe
of the President's ac-
tivities the past five
years.
Congresswoman Bar-
bara Jordan, native
Houstonian, Rep. Char-
les Rangel, (D-N. Y.),
and Rep. John Conyers,
(D-Mich.), were t h ethree black members of
the historic panel.
The Committee for-
mally concluded its im-
peachment inquiry b y
urging "... in t h e
name ... of all the peo-
ple" that Richard Nixon
be stripped of the presi-
dency for high crimes
and misdemeanors." To
wit:
*Obstructing justice
in covering up the Wa-
tergate affair, a two year
old political scandal, in-
volving aides and Cabi-
net members.
*Misusing federal
agents and agencies i nviolation of the rights
of citizens, through
wire-tapping, tax inves-
tigations and other ac-
tivities.
*Refusing to comply
with Committee sub -
poenas for 147 tape-re-
corded conversations
and other material which
had been sought as evi-
dence for the impeach-
ment inquiry.
The end of the com-
mittee's six days of na-
tionally televised delib-
erations came almost as
an anti-climax, after the
drama of the first im-
