Outstanding Student With Special Needs (Post-Secondary)
When Debra Kay entered Amarillo College in 1986, she was a single parent in need of
retraining who was economically disadvantaged and who possessed a physical disability
that qualified her for assistance through the Texas Rehabilitation Commission. She
enrolled in the Radiography Program, where she has maintained a 3.2 grade point average.
She combines classroom instruction with off-campus training, rotating at 3-week intervals
between Northwest Texas Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, and High Plains Baptist Hos-
pital. She will have interacted with over 2,000 patients by the time she graduates next
August with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. She is in the top 10% of her class.
She has worked as a peer tutor, helping other students with their academics. She is a
member of the Blue Blazers, a campus service volunteer organization. She is a "Who's Who
in American Junior Colleges." She is an officer in the Future Radiographers of America.

Outstanding Vocational Student With a Disability (Secondary)
Gordon is a Vocational Education for the Handicapped student at the Hurst-Euless-Bedford
ISD Technical Education Center. He has been enrolled in food production management and
services for four years. Gordon is the first special education student in the school district
who has been trained in a vocational program to be placed in employment within the
community. Gordon is a courtesy clerk with Albertson's, a local grocery store. Some
customers will only shop at Albertson's on the days that Gordon is working. He has been
an "Employee of the Month." Gordon has been the "Outstanding Student" for both the
Vocational and Special Education Departments. He is an active member in Future
Homemakers of America/Home Economics Related Occupations. He is active in all aspects
of school activities such as special olympics, bowling, swimming, and Christmas programs.

Sharon is a Hotel/Motel Management student at Central Texas College. She is a single
parent and is legally blind. She maintains a 3.4 grade point average while working 40 hours
a week to support her family. Sharon has passed the American Hotel and Motel Association
Educational Institute Certification Exams in the following subjects: Tourism/Hospitality;
Food & Beverage Controls; Hotel/Motel Law; Supervisory Housekeeping; Front Office
Procedures; Hotel/Motel Sales Promotion; and Human Relations/Supervisory Develop-
