are not conscious and should be
paid no attention. What the ne-

make the most of his opportuni-

The city man who rq§bes through

deep down in his heart that some-

THE BUY KING’S SAD LOT.
One of the most interesting
figures of tD-dav is Alfonso XIII,
King of Spain, who belongs en-
tirely and exclusively to the
Twenthieth Century. The
that he has passed on this side of
1900 have been few and irrespon-
sible. He does not take up the
reigns of sovereignty or assume
the cares of kingship until 1902,
and between now and then revo-
lutions may overwhelm his hap-
less country.
But he already sits upon a dig-
nified throne, and though at pres-
ent he is unknown outside his own
palace, he has a near prospect of
ruling the destinies of twenty
millions of subjects.
Few Kings, even of Spain, have
begun life nnder worse auspices.
His name is unfortunate; bis
number a pledge of bad luck.
His unhappy father was dead be-
fore he came into the world, and
his mother, the daughter of an
Austrian Archduke,was confront-
ed with the hateful task of ruling
an antipathetic country.
$o far the mother has emerged
from an impossible situation with
a certain distinction, if without
rruch glorv. But the son will

That quoit* is now played chief

those who do not play it and
bring it into fashion. It is no
doubt a very ancient English
game, and its beginnings are lost
in the mist of ages. Hakluyt

years j ages,” so it was well known in
Queen Elizatieth’s time, when it
probably was one of the favorite
sports of Merrie England. la
some parts of the country the
rustics used to employ horse-
sh<N-s for want of properly made
quoits, and there are districts in
which the quoit is called a
“slu**” even to this day. This
gives us the dew to the most
probable origin of the S] *rt, and
hints that the first game of quoits
was started by throwing old
horseshoe* at the hob or mark,
and from this gradually grew up
the practice of having quoits sjs-c-
ially made for throwing. So
much for the discus legend. As
for die word “quoit” itself, its
etymology is more than doubt
fill, and it gives us no clew what-
ever to the origin of the game.
