kept on a lard-supplemented diet.
7. The offspring of the second generation must be capable
of normal growth and development during the period of lactation
and continue normal growth and development after weaning, while
continuing on the test diet.
8. The test substance should produce no effect on gastro-
intestinal motility, on the absorption of other food substances,
or on the com position and consistency of the feces. This may be
adequately established on the basis of the weight of fecal
output in relation to food consumed over an adequate period of
observation.
9. It must be evident that the substance in question, fed
over lon eriods of time, produces no change from the normal
as re ards the composition of blood, or upon the or ans and
tissues of the body.
Experimental Results
With these criteria in mind experiments vere oe un on January
16, 1939, and have been continued to-date (Sept. 30, 1939); i.e.,
for a period of 8 mos., 14 days. In a preliminary experiment, 24
rats (12 males and 12 females) from our stock colony (inbred .ristar
strain) were divided into four groups of six each. Each animal was
kept in a separate cage of suitable design. The basal diet in this
laboratory consists of Purina chow. In the experiments two diets were
prepared: L.Ground purina chow 90 per cent, lard 10 per cent; 2.Ground
