American
Cancer Society
Don Diamond . of
Cleburne will serve as
, Chairman of the 1985-86
Crusade in Area VI.
, Mr. Diamond will oversee
the—fundraising activities
for a 50 county area
around Fort Worth. The
announcement was made
by Colonel Loy Norris,
Area VI Vice-Presi-
dent.
Last year Area VI
raised $1,095,000 which
is the largest amount
ever raised for the Area.
This $1,095,000 will
be used for prevention,
early detection and treat-
ment of cancer and to
" provide assistance to
cancer patients.
In cancer research,
the American Cancer
Sosiety is' second only
to the Federal Govern-
ment's National Cancer
Institute. During • the
fiscal year, ending August
31; 1984, more than
$55 million was invested
by the .National Society
in more than 656 nation-
wide research projects.
"The breakdown of
how American Cancer
r Society funds are spent
j in Texas represents one
of the best returns on
, the dollar that I know
of," said Diamond.
, In preparing for the
Crusade, Diamond feels
it , is important for the
community to realize
ACS expenditures. "It
is one part of the ACS
we're most proud of
and I think our friends
and neighbors will be
more willing 'to give
to cancer control if
they know how ‘ well
their money agjs being
spent," he said."
I The following represents
the breakdown of how
each dollar raised last
year by the ACS is being
spent this fiscal year
(September 1,. 1984
August 31, 1985) in Texas: >
Cancer Research, $.29;
Professional Education,
.11; Public - Education,
.28; Service/Rehabilitation,
------------------- Development.....
Administration, .06;
Crusade, .12'; for a total
of$l.ll.
This 111 percent expend-
iture reflects increased
research allocations
to Texas by our National
Society.
"The ACS is currently
sponsoring research
investigations in 12 major
Texas hospitals, medical
schools and universities
totaling over $6 million,"
said Diamond. "Because
Texas has so many research
institutions, the National
Society allocates additional
funds here." J
"In spite of severe
inflationary trends, we I
were able to keep tight I
control over our adminis- I
trative costs and keep I
them within acceptable I
limits as this breakdown I
indicates," Diamond I
commented. I
ACS programs such I
as patient service and I
rehabilitation (Reach-to-Re I
covery, esophageal speech I
