In the past 251yearsonly
one newspaper has won three
Pulitzer Prizes for Public Service.
Naturally its one ofArerica's
to best newspapers.Of all the Pulitzer Prizes awarded annually,
the gold medal for meritorious public service is
the most significant.
For this is the one - and only - Pulitzer
Prize awarded to a-newspaper rather than to an
individual.
The gold medal is given for "a distin
guished example of meritorious public service
by a newspaper through the use of its journalis-
tic resources . .
In the past 25 years, only one newspaper
has won three Pulitzer Prizes for meritorious
public service - Newsday, the Long Island
newspaper.
The 1974 Pulitzer gold medal has been
awarded to Newsday for "The Heroin Trail," alandmark 32-part series that traced the move-
ment of heroin from the poppy fields of Turkey
to the streets of Long Island.
Newsday also won Pulitzer gold medals in
1954 and 1970 for stories that exposed corrup-
tion on Long Island.
Another recognition of editorial excellence
came last January when Time Magazine
selected Newsday as one of the 10 best news-
papers in America.
But, in the final analysis, the most meaning-
ful testimonial to Newsday is simply this:
In Nassau-Suffolk, the ninth largest SMSA,
2.7 million people have a choice every day of
some of the best newspapers in the world.
Three out of five of them choose Newsday. The Long Island Newspaper
