Long Trip
By RAYMOND J CROWLEY
WASHINGTON (AP)—A noted
newsman was recovering Thurs-
day from a hangover induced by
elation. The elation arose from
his success with an old love-he
got to escort the Mona Lisa across
the Atlantic Ocean.
Meantime, at the National Gal-
lery of Art the Secret Service
kept guard on the 450-year-old
masterpiece with refined tech-
niques of modern science, includ-
ing a television ' eye." This would
have pleased the painter of Mo-
na's portrait. Leonardo da Vinci
was, among other things, an in-
ventor way ahead of his time.
But first about the reporter and
his romance across-the-centuries:
For 30 years, Edward T. Folliard,
globe-trotting White House cor-
respondent for the Washington
Post and a Pulitzer Prize win-
ner, has doted on Mona. He
dreamed that one day she might
leave the Paris Louvre to visit
America.
Last May, Folliard lunched
with Andre Malraux, French min-
ister of cultural affairs, and
raised the subject of the visit
This led to negotiations which cul-
minated in Mona Lisa's arrival
Wednesday, amid the deference
due a queen
Folliard came across the ocean
with her, not in her cabin aboard
the liner France but in one fair
ly close by. He was a happy man.
Repairing to the dining salon,
he was presented with a French
wine list about a yard long.
A teetotaler of long standing.
Folliard said firmly: “No wine''
The waiter acted as if he could
hardly believe his ears. He con-
ferred with the chief wine stew-
ard, and both looked so devastat
ed that Folliard relented
He hoisted one as a toast to
Mona Lisa. s
Well, one thing led to another,
and by the time the France
docked and Folliard started
through customs, he told the of-
ficial: “I have nothing to declare .
except a hangover. "
During the journey. Folliard
found that joys are seldom un
mixed An underlying worry' kept
gnawing him What would his
wife, Helen, think of his voyage
with Mona?
“I kept thinking." Folliard said
Thursday, "of my Helen and of
Helen of Troy
"Christopher Marlowe's lines
about the latter Helen kept run-
ning through my head:
"'. . . The face that launch'd
thousand ships.
" And burnt the topless towers
of Ilium "
“I was afraid that my Helen:
would launch a thousand pieces!
of crockery at my head.
"But I bought her some per-
fume in Paris, and she has proved
to be very understanding She re-
alizes that the relations between
Lisa and me are purely platonic "
On arrival, the air-conditioned
box containing Mona Lisa was
stowed away in a vault of the
National Gallery She is to be un-
veiled Jan 8 by President Ken-
nedy with elaborate protocol.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A
400-pnund sea turtle bent on lay-
ins her eggs near a busy street
at 4 30 a.m. handed two police-
men a ponderous problem The
turtle refused to be steered back
into the sea, no matter how hard
they pushed.
A turtle consultant said she
would certainly leave if they
stepped on her tail They did, and
she did - but only a few feet
where she balked again.
Finally, the two sweatins po
licemen roped her and dragged
her several hundred feet back to
the water, and she swam away to
look for an unincorporated area
where there were no meddlesome
policeman.
