Asmussen to speak at TTBA meeting
internationally acclaimed jockey
Cash Asmussen will be the keynote
speaker at the Texas Thoroughbred
Breeders' Association (TTBA)
Annual Meeting on Saturday, Jan.
28, at the Doubletree Hotel in
Austin.
A native of Laredo, Asmussen
recently earned the coveted Golden
Whip Award as France's leading
jockey of 1988, having broken the
French riding record by piloting
more than 200 winners during the
year. Asmussen also won the
Golden Whip Award in 1985 and
1986, and has ridden a career total
of over 1,800 winners at tracks
throughout the world - from the
Breeders' Cup to the Japan Cup -
and his mounts have earned a
collective total of over $27 million.
Asmussen will share his
international perspective on racing
with annual meeting attendees.
Other meeting highlights include
the 1988 Texas-breed Champion
Awards; the Texas Thoroughbred
Breeder of the Year; the TTBA
Member of the Year; and several
other special presentations.
The sechdule of events, which
begins with registration at 3:30
p.m., includes a business meeting
which will feature comments from
several key people in the Texas
breeding and racing industry.
For more information, contact
the TTBA at 512/458-6133.
Every band that hits
the big time starts as
the boys down the
block who strum
guitars out in the
garage. A local group
beginning to move
out of home territory
and develop a
following in several
states is Texas
Unlimited, a band
with their roots in
Dime Box.
From Saturday
night dances at their
home base, the group
of five musicians has
branched out. A
contract with Encore
Entertainment, a
Dallas based
nationwide booking
agency, has the group
now spending almost
as much time out-of-
state as they do at
local dances.
Harold Becker dies
in Houston hospital
the group on bass guitar and vocals.
"We've got the best group we've
ever had," said Steve. "You have to
be willing to give up a lot for this
job."
Longtime Giddings businessman
Harold Becker died December 27, at
the age of 64. Becker had been
seriously ill for several months and
had been in the hospital for a
month prior to his death. He died in
Veterans Hospital in Houston.
Becker and his wife, Verna,
purchased Becker's Service Station,
located at Highway 77 North and
Independence Street in Giddings, in
1954.
In 1956 Becker suffered a spinal
injury which confined him to a
wheelchair the remainder of his life.
He worked hard despite the handicap
and was at his service station
almost daily repairing vehicles.
Becker's Service Station will
remain open under the ownership of
Mrs. Becker.

Regular gigs arc
still scheduled at
Dime Box on a
monthly basis. The
Hall of Fame in
Bryan, Lumberyard in
Austin and
neighboring
Lexington. Besides
other Texas cities
from Baytown to
Amarillo, the band
now regularly travels to
Albuquerque, Clovis, and Santa Fe,
New Mexico, and Pheonix,
Arizona. They are presently
working on a deal to play Calgary,
Alberta, Canada later this year.
Bookings are already set for all
through 1989.
TEXAS UNLIMITED BAND
Band members have changed
some since the group's formation in
1980. Two founding Dime Box
band members still leading the
group are Tim Langham, lead
singer and rhythm guitar player and
Steve Jatzlau who plays keyboards
and does both lead and back-up
vocalizations.
Brad Ruthven of Lexington,
whose parents, Jack and Trink, had
a popular local band for years, plays
lead guitar and also sings. Ken
Smith of Caldwell plays drums and
Barry Floyd of Austin rounds out
Texas Unlimited tours on their
own Greyhound bus and are
shooting for 200 bookings in 1989.
While on the road the group stays
in hotels and are away from home
for two to three weeks at a time.
They have done lead-in for
George Strait, Gary Morris, Sawyer
Brown, Eddie Raven, Gene Watson,
David Frizell, and have done some
shows with Jeff Chance.
Tim and Steve own all the band's
equipment and have for the eight
years they have played together. In
1983 the boys lost all their sound
equipment. They had just cleared a
loan and were booked the next
night. They then had to start all
over again.
The best part of their new out-of-
state bookings is, "Having all the
fun getting to travel and see the
country.
The worst is wondering if we'll
ever really make it," said Tim.
"The best part is increasing the
crowds over the years through
improvement in our music," Steve
added.
The goal for ’89 for the Dime
Box-based group is to get a record
deal. Ed Bruce, a producer of new
groups, independent writer,
publisher and producer, has
expressed an interest in the band.
Texas Unlimited is a band with
the talent to go to the top,
evidenced by record breaking
attendance at appearances in several
states. All they need now is that
elusive "big break."

These carvings of Clarence Schulze's are some of his favorites. The elephant represents a tradition at Texas A&M
called 'Elephant Walk.' It was done for his daughter, Sharon, who attended Texas A&M.
The hearing of an elephant is about as acute as that of a cat Both animals can hear
sounds as soft as the footsteps of a mouse.
