Texas Savings Bonds sales
Giddings Volunteer Firefighters
answered the following calls:
Thursday, Dec. 29, small grass
fire behind Pizza Hut;
Sunday, January 1, 2 a.m.,
responded to a call that a barn was
on fire, it turned out to be a false
alarm, it was a bonfire.
Firemen request that anyone
wanting to burn brush or any other
type of controlled burn, call the Lee
County Sheriffs office at 542-2800
and report to them when the burn
will take place and the location.
Sales of United States Savings
Bonds in Texas amounted to
$21,871,073 during September
1988 for a total of $305,278,022
for fiscal year 1988. This October
1987-September 1988 figure
represents 87.2 percent of the
assigned goal of $350 million,
according to T.J. Morrow, District
Director for the U.S. Savings
Bonds Division in Texas.
Sales of Series EE Bonds
amounted to $162,995 during the
October 1987-September 1988
period in Lee County, said Fred
Hannes, Volunteer County
Chairman.
Nationally, total sales for fiscal
1988 amounted to $7,264 million.
The amount outstanding in U.S.
Savings Bonds as of September 30,
1988 reached $107.78 billion, a
gain of 9 percent over fiscal 1987.
All series EE Bonds purchased on
or after November 1, 1982 - and
held at least five years - will earn
85 percent of the average market
yield on Treasury marketable
securities. The average yield for
Bonds held since the beginning of
the market-based interest rate on
November 1, 1982 is 8.50 percent;
the six-month rate for the period
November 1, 1988 - April 30, 1989
is 7.35 percent. Outstanding Series
E/EE Bonds and Savings Notes held
for at least five years after
November 1, 1982 are also earning
this market-based rate. Bonds held
less than five years earn interest on
a fixed, graduated scale.

Report
Christmas gift stolen
A new red and black Huffy
bicycle was reported as stolen from
the front yard of a home on
Brenham Street. Celestine Jones
reported the bicycle missing at 10
p.m. Friday.
Jones' son reportedly noticed the
bicycle missing from the front yard
of the family home at 458 West
Breham Street and the police were
notified. The bicycle was a
Christmas gift.
The bicycle was recovered
Saturday in the 400 block of North
Burleson. It had been taken apart,
but all bicycle parts were there.
