; Better Tennants
Seme of our larger landlords,
as they become able, are building
better dwellings on the farms for
tenants. There has been too
much of a disposition in the past
of forcing tenants to live almost
out of doors, which some Mexi
cans are willing to do, but few
white men.
There has also been a tendency
to rent to Mexicans rather than
to white men. The excuse is
that the Mexicans are better
workers; but some of the Ameri
can tennants say, it is because
the landlord can force the Mexi
cans to almost any kind of wages
and terms and the Americans
have not been brought to that
state of peonage and serfdlom
yet. .
We know there is a tendency
to rent to Mexicans, rather than
to white men, on the part of some
of our large landlords and that it
has been hard for people coming
in, as well as young men who
would like to marry and get a ten
nant home, to get places on ac
countof the Mexicans who will
do any way and submit to most
any kind of a contract.
The News does not believe that
the smiles of Providence will fall
upon us, or that our fields will
yield their best fruit, when we op
press the tennant. The planter
who provides the best for his
tennants and treats them as fel
low citizens will reap better re
suite, in our opinion, .and we
have the Good Book for it.
The meanest trick reported to
this office during the holidays,
in our opinion, was the throwing

dow into the Methodist church as
