The Gift of Life
By Lucille Hollander
Staff Writer
Each year during the holiday season thousands of
cute puppies and kittens are sold as holiday gifts.
Each year around March many of these puppies
and kittens find their way into local shelters.
After the holidays are over and the reality of feed-
ing, walking, housebreaking and so on set in, many
people find that the puppy or kitten is more responsibil-
ity than they had anticipated.
This year, consider spreading the word about shel-
ter adoption. There are many, many pets who are either
strays or who the owners surrender to shelters every
year that would make fine companions.
I recently had the pleasure of adopting a dog from
the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Control for the
City of Houston.
The staff there are overwhelmed by sheer numbers
of homeless animals but are kind, courteous, and genu-
inely care for the animals in the shelter.
The adoption value at this facility is outstanding.
My newly adopted family member, who my son and I
named Winston Petunia Hollander III, is a purebred En-
glish Bulldog. Here is what he would cost on the open
market:
English Bulldog, young, excellent conformation
and markings
$1800
Neuter
Vet exam
S#l®;®!
$100
$50
Heartworm test and one month of medication
$25
Full set of immunizations including rabies
$75
Boarding fee with veterinary supervision, 7 days
$175
Total commercial value, $2225.
My cost to adopt, $45
The facility does not have an unlimited budget so
many dogs who are not adopted must be euthanized. The
staff would much rather place adoptable animals in good
homes.
Pets for adoption can be viewed online using the
link below, and online instructions will guide you if you
find that perfect pet pictured in their available animals.
This season, give the gift of life: please research
first to make sure you have an idea of the time and re-
sponsibility involved in ownership, and would like to
adopt, and then please give a second chance to a dog/
puppy or cat/kitten from B ARC.
