Walker County Genealogical Society

The Walker County Genealogical Society (WCGS) aims to further genealogical research and scholarship for its members and for all who are interested in learning more about their families and the circumstances and places from which they originate. WCGS is a major contributor to and proudly supports the Johnnie Jo Sowell Dickenson Genealogy Room at the Huntsville Public Library. The Genealogy Room houses more than 5,000 bound volumes, covering topics such as TDC convict records (ledgers and indexes) and local birth, death, cemetery and marriage records. The Genealogy Room has an excellent southern and antebellum collection, as well as resources for American colonial research. The Room also houses many family histories contributed by WCGS members and their friends.

The Genealogy Room currently has available more than 50,000 digital images in its Special Collections section, as well as an archives room that contains vertical files on individuals, families and subjects of interest to genealogical researchers. Such files contain materials from local, state, national and international sources that may not be found elsewhere. Volunteers of WCGS work closely with the professional staff of the Huntsville Public Library to maintain and expand these resources for genealogists and all others who are interested in researching their family histories.

WCGS meets at the Huntsville Public Library the third Saturday of every month except during the summer months. Twice a year, in February and August, the Huntsville Public Library and WCGS host “Genealogy Weekend” in which attendees enjoy excellent speakers, a lock-in (where the Genealogy Room is made exclusively available to participants) and other activities of interest to genealogists and family researchers.
Membership in WCGS is open to anyone interested in genealogy. Dues are nominal. Members provide a copy of their ancestor chart to the Society and make individual annual gifts to the Library in the form of books or other suitable materials or a monetary donation.
