Schuhmann Family Photographs

The Schuhmann Family Photo Collection consists of 38 black and white photos taken primarily in Fayette and Runnels counties. The collection belonged to the Gustav and Caroline Albers Schuhmann family and their son, Walter Schuhmann and his wife, Elsie Voelkel Schuhmann. Gustav was born in 1858 in Waldeck, Fayette County, Texas to German settlers and played in the Schuhmann Band. He operated a general store in Walhalla until 1899, when he and his family boarded a train with all of their belongings and moved to Rowena in West Texas. There, Gustav prospered in the cattle business, opened a general store and Schuhmann Hardware Co., became the post master, installed the first telephone and was president of the first bank. His sons later operated Schuhmann Hardware.
