The Sanger Area Newspaper Collection hosts the Sanger Courier, the first newspaper published in Sanger, starting in 1900, and the Sanger News, a weekly newspaper begun in 2012. Sanger, a city just shy of 7,000 residents, is located in northern Denton County, and has a long history in the cattle and livestock industry. The city of Sanger was founded in 1886 as a stop on the Sante Fe Railroad, which served as an easy location for cattle from surrounding ranches to be transferred to northern markets. The Courier documents Sanger’s growth in the ranching sector, even as it has expanded in population and geography into the 21st-century. The Sanger Area Newspaper Collection has been added to The Portal to Texas History through the support of a Tocker Foundation grant awarded to the Sanger Public Library.
