History

St. Mary’s University is a Catholic and Marianist liberal arts institution founded in 1852 in San Antonio, making it the oldest Catholic university in Texas and the American Southwest. The Rattler is the St. Mary’s University bimonthly, student-run newspaper.

The Rattler continued a monthly publication edited by students that began in 1918. In the 90 years since the Rattler has been published, it has received numerous awards for excellence, including honors from the National Scholastic Press Association and the Associated Collegiate Press.

The newspaper is a rich source of history and culture: it documents student life, sports, holiday celebrations, as well as the history of the campus buildings, administration, and faculty. The Rattler contains news, commentary, and notice of current events related to the university, local community, the nation, and the world.
