The first iteration of the Lufkin Daily News began publication in 1906, serving the city of Lufkin and wider Angelina County. In its first incarnation, the News published until January 27, 1959. Begun by Charles Schless, the News had changed ownership to George Watford and W.C. Binion by 1914. Earlier newspaper issues, up to World War II, show strong Populist leanings in a county whose economy was heavily driven by timber exports via the railroad, the newspaper documents this area's growth until the Great Depression and World War II.
