Don Hutcheson Aerial Photograph Collection

This collection contains aerial photographs taken by Abilene, Texas commercial photographer Don Hutcheson (1926-2004) and donated to Hardin-Simmons University upon his retirement in 1989. These images record the architecture, business development, and land use of the Texas Rolling Plains Region and elsewhere in the second half of the twentieth century.

Many of the aerial photographs were commissioned by oil drilling companies and document environmental impacts to the land by mining and drilling activities in West Texas and New Mexico. Hutcheson also recorded activities at two of the universities in Abilene: Hardin-Simmons University and Abilene Christian University. Although most images document the region around Abilene, Texas, there are also aerials of land in Georgia (Atlanta) and the Vermejo Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
