Hardin-Simmons Glass Lantern Slide Collection

These scans of glass slides dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries come from the following groupings:

  • One group of slides appears to have been purchased from known slide photographers and vendors such as T. H. McAllister of New York and Underwood and Underwood.
  • Another large group of professionally produced slides in the collection was the work of photographers of the American Colony (1881-1940s) in Jerusalem. These slides provide important documentation of the people and countryside at the beginning of the 20th century in what was then Palestine. They are labeled with the American Colony logo, and most have the subject identified.
  • The final group of slides appears to be amateur photographs of group trips throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. Dress indicates that these slides date to the early 1900s around the Gibson girl era.
