About the Physical Collection

Dale T. Smith’s personal collection of Neiman Marcus artifacts includes posters, prints, original art, shopping bags, store display and merchandising props, and Neiman Marcus exclusive products, gifts, and souvenirs. The collection offers an informal record of Neiman Marcus’ history, company culture, and unique shopping experience, within the span of decades 1910 to 2020.

Biography of Dale T. Smith

Neiman Marcus was founded in Dallas, Texas in 1907 as a specialty store with an early reputation for high quality. “The Store,” as it was called by the co-founder’s son and longtime C.E.O., Stanley Marcus, expanded its reputation over the next century to become known as a standard in luxury department store retail, a showcase of fashion, art, and culture, and a unique, curated shopping experience. Dallas native and veteran Neiman Marcus employee, Dale T. Smith, gifted his personally collected artifacts and store memorabilia to the University of North Texas Libraries Special Collections in 2021.
