Published by Tracy Siemering and Jason Newcomb, the Daily State Journal served news needs related to the Austin community, as well as wider Travis County and Texas. A post-Civil War, Republican newspaper, The Daily State Journal was the official newspaper of Edmund Davis' Texas Reconstruction governorship, and it centered on publicizing new laws enacted by the new government. During his tenure as governor, Davis created the Printing Bill, providing an official public printer and a state journal, designating that regional newspapers such as the Daily State Journal be required to publish official notices.
