The Decatur News, serving Decatur and wider Wise County, was a weekly newspaper first appearing in 1881, published by L.W. Tyler. Decatur was founded in 1856 and is the county seat of Wise County. The town began to flourish after the establishment of the first post office and school in 1857. In the early 1860s the first of four courthouses was erected. Decatur Baptist College was finished in 1898 and became the first 2-year college ever established in the state of Texas. The Decatur News continued publication until merging with the Wise County Messenger in 1935.
