Castroville Area Newspapers

The Castroville Public Library’s collection of local newspapers includes six different periodicals, produced by various publishers in the region. It comprises both bound hard copies and microfilm, which contain the history of both the city of Castroville and wider Medina County. These newspapers contain news, feature articles, birth, marriage, and death notices, photographs, event notices, advertisements, and other information of interest to those researching the early settlement of Texas. The content published in the newspapers reveals a broader story of the area’s development and the people who built this community than that which is currently available in published histories of the region.

The population of Castroville is currently about 3,000, many of whom can trace their family history in Texas to these early settlers from Alsace. The newspapers in the Castroville Area Newspaper Collection in the years following settlement are an essential record of events in Texas during the past century. However, these newspaper articles are more than just a valuable source of information about historical events. They reveal how people viewed those events and how the local community and culture developed over time. Each article provides a snapshot of the lives of those who lived here before us.
