Founded in 1889, the Commerce Journal is a weekly newspaper serving Commerce, Texas. It hosts obituaries, advertising, and local news. Is now owned and run by Herald-Banner Publications along with the Greenville Herald-Banner. The town of Commerce was formed when William Jernigan and Josiah Jackson established a trading post and mercantile store where the present-day downtown area is. The town was established in 1872 and named "Commerce" due to the thriving economic activity generated by cotton fields and farm and ranch lands between the Middle and South Sulphur Rivers in Hunt County. The town incorporated in 1885. In 1887, a railroad was built through Commerce to transport merchandise from Fort Worth In 1894, William L. Mayo moved East Texas Normal College, now known as Texas A&M University–Commerce, from the northeast Texas town of Cooper to Commerce.
