This collection contains various materials such as correspondence, newspapers, essays, audio recordings, notes and programs concerning the Black Panther Party, the civil rights movement in the United States, and African American history.

Biographical Note

J. J. Barlow was born and raised in Earth, Texas. In 1955, Barlow graduated from Texas Technological College (Texas Tech.) with his Bachelors degree. In the summer of 1966, Barlow attended and participated in the NDEA Institute in History at Spelman College and continued on to become a life-long educator. He received a Masters of Education from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) in 1980. On February 27, 2013, J. J. Barlow passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his spouse, four children and seven grandchildren.
