Bank deposits up overall
Terry Ferguson, FFA Sweetheart at Fruitvale high
school, represented the chapter in the annual district
sweetheart contest. The Fruitvale Future Farmers of
America were well represented at the district con-
tests and banquet in Mineola January 17. The
Greenhand skills team, made up of Mike Moran, Tim
Driskill and Sheb Smith received a first place plaque.
Others at the banquent were Christie Akins, Mavis
Berry, Rusty Smith, Susan Dickerson and Adviser
Loyd Nations.
Mott of the banks in Van
Zandt County found 1982
a good year, if the total
deposits at the end of the
fourth quarter are any in-
dication. But a lot of
changes occurred in the
banking community which
aren’t reflected by the
figures.
Canton First National
Bank had the largest
amount of deposits at the
end of the fourth quarter
with $20.9 million, as well
as the laigest gain in actual
money of any of the banks
in the county. The bank's
deposits increased $4.7
million last year. First Na-
tional changed hands at
the end of the year and is
now a part of TransTexas
Bancshares.
Van First State Bank
and Grand Saline First Na-
tional Bank aren't far
behind the Canton bank.

in Wills Point showed the

Citizens is one of the
newest banks in the coun-
ty, having been in opera
tion over 18 months. Its
total deposits for the
quarter ending December
31 were $7.6 million.
It isn't the newest bank,
however. Canton's Traders
State bank takes that prize
opening last fall. It's fourth
quarter deposits were listed
at $6.2 million.
Ben Wheeler First State
Bank listed deposits of $5.8
million, a gain of $600,000
over 1982.
Edgewood First National
Bank was the only bank in
the county to show a loss in
total deposits. The bank's
fourth quarter figures were
$3.8 million, a loss of 4.6
percent over 1981. A new
bank president started the
1983 year as James Pickens
took over for his father who
will continue as chairman
of the board.

County Extension Agent
Fruit Growers
Conference
The annual East Texas
Fruit Growers Conference
which is jointly sponsored
by Van Zandt, Smith,
Wood, Rains and Hender-
son County Extension
Agents will be held on
Tuesday, February 15,
1983 at Harvey hall in
Tyler. It will begin at 9:00
a.m. and be concluded at
2:30 p.m. A $10.00
registration fee will include
a barbeque lunch and
printed materials provided
by the speakers.
A special part on the
program will be devoted to
grape production. If
weather permits, we will
also tour Malcolm Davis
Ten acre grape vineyard
which is located near Mar-
tins Mill in Van Zandt
County. There will also be
a tour of a blueberry
operation located near Ben
Wheeler.
I certainly encourage
any one interested in rais
ing peaches, apples, pears,
grapes, blueberries, or
strawberries to attend this
conference. It is directed at
both the home orchard
producer and the large
operation. We’ll have ex-
cellent speakers in all areas
listed above who will talk
about variety selection,
planting techniques, insect
control, disease control,
pruning, and other
management criteria.
There will also be a display
of spraying equipment and
irrigation equipment.
Chemical suppliers and
nursery operators will also
have chemicals and plants
available for purchase.
Plan now to be there. It
will be an excellent pro-
gram. Also, plan to make
the two tours following the
program at Harvey Hall.
You’ll be highly impressed
with Malcolm'^ Muscadine
Vineyard as well as
blueberry operation. Both
use drip irrigation and ex-
cellent management
techniques. Blueberries
and grapes would very well
be the cops of the future
for Van Zandt County.
Treat now for Grassburs:
The time to treat your
hay meadows or home
lawns for grassburs is from
February 15 to March 1.
Treat hay meadows and
pastures with simazine
which is sold under the
tradename, Princep 80W.
Lawns should be treated
with Balan or Batasan. All
three chemicals I have
mentioned are pre-emerge
herbicides. They prevent
the seed from annual
grasses such as grassburs
from germinating. If the
seed have already ger-
minated, the chemicals do
not do any good. Conse-
quently, they must be ap-
plied before March 1.
A few words of caution
are in order. First, read the
label before applying any
pre-emerge herbicide and
follow it closely or you may
not get the desired results.
Also, none of these
chemicals will prevent ger-
mination for the entire
season. As a result you
need to apply a second ap-
plication in late May to
prevent germination in
June or early July. Also,
none of the labels mention
grassburs. Just remember
that the grassbur is an an-
nual grass. Follow direc-
tions for controlling an-
nual grasses.
Home Gardening Clinic:
Our annual Van Zandt
County home gardening
clinic will be held from 7-9
p.m., March 7-8, 1983. Jot
those dates on your calen-
dar. I’ll have more infor-
mation on this later. It will
be held at the Van Zandt
County Fairgrounds.
Farm-Ranch Banquet:
The 1983 Van Zandt
County Farm-Ranch Ban-
quet will be held on Satur-
day night, March 26 at 7
p.m. in the Canton High
School Cafetorium. Our
speaker will be Dr. Zerle
Carpenter, Director of the
Texas Agricultural Exten-
sion Service. Plan now to
be there. We’ll have more
information on this in
March.

WILLS POINT-In a
special session Monday
night, members of the
Wills Point School Board
voted to add a permanent
structure to the elementary
school.
Representatives from
SHWC. Inc., a Dallas ar-
chitectural firm, met with
the board to discuss four
alternative plans to meet
rising enrollment figures.
Superintendent Dr.
Dennis Townsend pointed
out that although the new
addition will be built and
ready for classes by next
year, it will not solve long-
range problems concerning
increased enrollment.
He said more space will
be needed if the elemen-
tary school is going to
achieve a 25 students to
one teacher ratio.
“It is a tough decision
for the board to have to
make sometime in the
future, to decide whether
to build a new elementary
school, a new high school,
or what,” said Dr. Town-
send.
According to Townsend,
money for the elementary
school addition will come
from two sources; $100,000
worth of bonds remaining
from a 1971 bond issue
with the remaining
$255,000 coming from the
budget.
“It will almost deplete
our reserves, however,”
said Townsend.
"The project will mean
only a one cent increase, at
the most, in the Interest
and Sinking Fund tax rate
next year,” he pointed out.
“When we issue the bonds,
we commit ourselves to a
10-year payback period,"
he said.
Using the Cohort Sur-
vival Technique for predic-
ting enrollment increases
during the next few years,
SHWC. Inc. said that
within five years, the
school’s enrollment will in-
crease from 1,550 to 1,962
students. The architects
said that within 10 years,
the increase will be about
800 students or 150 per-
cent.
Townsend said after the
elementary school addi-
tion, the board will check
the projections by studying
enrollment figures for the
next couple of years.
"Then we can see if the
trends are really accurate,"
he said.
“We are not projecting a
bond issue at this point.
Somewhere in the future,
we will have to have a bond
issue, but that decision will
be made based on what our
enrollment does," Town-
send pointed out.
Other options being con-
sidered include building a
high school and athletic
complex, a new elementary
building or a new middle
school.
The board will meet
Thursday for further
discussion on the options.
