Tax Will Start
On April 1st Library Board
tax started to come in but went
ahead an hired a man for this
position in January. The council
also recently approved the addi-
tion of 65 new street lights as
part of the emapaign pledge.
Special sales tax charts are
available to any merchant need-
ing one at the city hall. They
can be secured from Mrs. Vir-
ginia Newman, city secretary.
The new one per cent city
sales tax will go into effect on
April 1. This is the special one
per cent city tax that was ap-
proved by Portland voters last
December.
At the time that the election
was proposed the city promised
that the money would be used
for several things. Chief among
these uses was the hiring of a
special narcotics officer and the
installation of street lights. Due
to the urgent need of a narcotics
officer the city elected not to
wait until the money from the

The Portland Library Board,
at its regular meeting on Tues-
day, made plans for the obser-
vance of Library Week, which
will be April 18 24. Pdster, pins,
and other publicity objects have
been ordered by the Friends
who will have their annual drive
at this time and also will spon-

At this time artifacts of early
Portland history will be on dis-
play. There will be mentos
from the early Bayview College,
pictures and brochures. Speak-
rs will be available for clubs.
The Reverend Robert Sebesta
is working on these plans, along
with Richard Hessong and mem-
bers of the Friends executive
board.
The board also voted to
change its regular meeting time
to the fourth Tuesday because of
a conflict with the Chamber of
Commerce. Richard Hessong,
chairman of children's ser-
vices, discussed the annual sum-
mer reading program.
After a discussion of building
possibilities, the board voted to
recommend to the city council
that it establish the Portland
separate account. L. T. Kolb,
Jr., reported that the new sign
Would be up this week. Mrs. Far-
rier gave a report on the county
library systems and a letter was
read urging all trustees to at-
tend the trustee meeting to be
held in connection with the TLA
meeting in Corpus Christi from
March 31- April 3.
