Dear Hellcat Family,
One of the challenges of writing columns
Sf for the Hellcat News is that they are due over
a month prior to publication. This creates a
situation whereby the author must mentally
place himself or herself a couple of months
I ahead. Inevitably, this was due to catch-up
with me and it did this past September (actually, that would
be July given the article submission schedule!).
September 15, 2015, marked the 70th anniversary of the
formation of this amazing organization. Unfortunately, I failed
to mention that very important fact in recent issues of the
Hellcat News so I would like to right that wrong here and now.
For you history types, the aforementioned event took place in
Heidenheim, Germany, on Sept. 15,1945, which was the third
anniversary of the formation of the 12th Armored Division at
Camp Campbell, KY. The first stateside reunion was held in
September 1947 in New York City. Were any of you Hellcats

Hello to the members of the 494th. I hope everyone is doing
well and that you have made your plans for Thanksgiving Day.
Don’t look now but Christmas is right around the corner...
I have just one piece of news this month and, unfortunately,
it is not the kind we like to hear. As you may have seen in
the October edition of the Hellcat News, Virginia Farran,
widow of Joe Farran, Jr. [SV], passed away this past March.
The following is the obituary that was published at the time
of her death:
“Virginia L. ‘Jinny’ Farran, 92, of Jacksonville died March
19, 2015 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville. She was born
June 19, 1922, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Albert and
Anna Hegarty Spreen. She married Joseph H. Farran, Jr. on
March 6, 1943, at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville
and he preceded her in death on July 21, 2014.
“Jinny is survived by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth ‘Maymie’
Bergschneider of Jacksonville, and Shirley Bacon of Madison,
IN, and sister-in-law, Rosella Spreen of Jacksonville; 25
nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Monsignor John
‘Bud’ Spreen and Albert Joseph Spreen, and one sister, Jane
Steele.
“Jinny graduated from Routt High School and attended
MacMurray College. She lived in Chicago and worked at
Illinois Central Railroad for four years. She then moved back
to Jacksonville and worked at the Norris Clinic and the City of
Jacksonville from which she retired. She was a member of the
Church of Our Saviour, Catholic Daughters of America, the
Altar and Rosary Society and Toast Mistress Club. She was an
avid card player and belonged to many Bridge Clubs over the
years. Jinny and Joe were proud to have been selected as grand
marshals of the 2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. She treasured
her role as aunt to 25 nieces and nephews and their families.
