The country In general mourned
with the people of Austin. Pa... on
the recent flood and the consequent
loss of life And now we- are begin-
ning to learn that the people for
sometime hall known -that the dam
was unsafe hut dared n<*t complain
because the Baylees Pulp and Pap-
er. company was responsible for
this dam and this company paid
out the wages earned in the town.
It wax a case where the lives of
the workers were gambled against,
greed and If shows how much a
naan’s Job means to him when he
is willing to run such a fearful risk.
It brought to mind an occurence in
of the largest factories Jn New
England some years ago where a
■tain driving pulley, some eight foot
by three, showed signs of disinte-
gration shortly after the starting
hour. The master mechanic was
called and refused to order the mil)
shut down, preferring to run the r£
of the wheel holding together until
night Three hours later the pulley
flew to pieces with such force that
a part of It went through the side
of the bodldlng. Fortunately no
one was killed, but that was an
accident, for before the mill was
shut down .this heavy be King flayed
the wood work
destroyed everything within reach.
It would have meant the loss of a
lew dollars to abut down, the mill
when the danger was realized and
that loss was considered of more
Importance than the lives of acme
hundreds of. wom«n and chlHren
which were pi? *» in, the balance.
