Group Meets to Save Log Cabin
and Request Community Help
The descendents of
Thomas, Joseph, and Eli
McDonald met again on
Sunday, May 2, at the
Community Hall to discuss
the renovation of the log
cabin. Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Jim
Jenkins, and Mr. and Mrs.
Leroy Anderwald met with
Park Board representatives,
Pam Fogel and Jalyn Sivells
and others to plan repairs
to the log cabin.
Peggy Ernst report-
ed that the Lions Club
plans a resolution to give
the cabin to the Park Board
who in turn will give the
cabin to the Harper
Historical Society. And the
Harper Historical Society
certainly wants to have a
part in its restoration.
In the meantime,
plans are underway to
begin work on the cabin by
placing a steel framework
inside the cabin to ensure
is stability, repair the roof,
replace the chinking, and
place a row of rock around
the bottom of the cabin to
replace damaged logs.
The committee is
planning to begin actual
work on Monday, May 17,
2004, 9:00 a.m. They
request volunteers bring
their own shovels and
picks and join in a day of
free fun at the park.
The committee is
asking for donated materi-
als to complete the work.
They will need:
money
quiktete
cedar shingles
gravel
chinking materials
cedar posts, and
donated hours of labor.
Anyone wishing to
give money, materials, or
time, should contact Peggy
Ernst (864-4388, 864-
4974, or 739-2101). Mrs.
Ernst and Mrs. Charlene
Taylor will account for
and disburse money for
this project.
Estimated costs to
repair and stabilize the
cabin are estimated to be
about one thousand dol-
lars. If necessary, the
group is thinking about
having a fund-raising
dance later in the year, but
the committee hopes that
the community will donate
the needs listed above.
Mrs Joyce
Anderwald has provided
the paper with a list of
names of local families
related to or descendents
of the McDonalds.
