Horace M Booth an old minister born
in 1S1 and licensed to preach In 1SJ5 was
ordained deacon by Bishop Andrew and
elder by Bishop Janes The loveliest trib-
utes were paid to his devotion and conse-
cration and the gentleness of bis old age
Report adopted
The bishop spoke most tenderly of these
memoirs and of the close of a long life
which pn ics away so peacefully Some-
day he said it will be our names that
nlll be called before the committee on me-
moirs and then what will the brethren
> > ny of us How are we doing our lifes
ork Covet the love of your brethren the
love of all mankind and keep so near to
Qod and so near to men that the very at-
mosphere shall be lllled with blessings
upon yon and your life
He expressed his pleasure at having
been among them at having become ac-
quainted with their work nt learning tho
difficulties which they hvve to meet their
constant struggles and their grand tri-
umphs He was especially gratified to
meet the laymen and ha was glad to
know how the annual conference strength-
ened them When you return to your
homes he said anticipate your pas
tors wants A little gmtlo and loving
forethought on your pnrt Is nlways need-
ed Uo home and be ln cooperation in
church work The church was never nbla
to prosecute Its missionary work until
It laid Its hands upon tho heads of its lay-
men and consecrated them to Its help
These are the two arms of the church
Without the help of Its laity It is like a
bird llylng with a broken wing Ho earn-
est and diligent with your work und give
the church Its other wing

The appointments were received In tho
happiest spirit by the conference A num
ber of changes havo been made and some
of tho preachers havo long moves before
them anil their years work will be among
strangers but If any of them felt their
appointment a hardship Ihey did not ex-

those which filled the church immediately
after adjournment and the members of
the East Tejaa conference have shown
that they are ready to go where the bishop
sends
NOTES AND PERSONALS
Some efforts are being made to organise
a Palestine Pilgrimage Parly among the
preachers to start for Palestine ln Feb-
ruary taking in other points of Interest
on the way Rev II O Scudday of Ijong
vtcw will furnish all desired Information
Rev R W Thompson demonstrated last
night that he believed In pouring as well
as In sprinkling A broken vase a shower
of oranges nnd persimmons and nbout two
gallons of water all came down on his de-
voted head ut once and still he waited and
heard the sermon through
This conference has handled In actual
cash more than 56S0CO The money has
gone to missions to building churches to
tho support of aged ministers and to the
widows nnd orphans of those who have
fallen ln the battle Every dollar Is ac-
counted for nnd every dollar goes to the
purposo for which lt was given
Tho world shows no finer examples of
devotion and elfsaeiiflco than is In the
lives of these men There Is not one of
them but could make more money In any
of the ordinary walks of life The large
salaries
are not too large and are the
exception Very many of them recelvo not
more than 1100 or 500 and many of tse
young men have lived on 150 or 800 They
could make more as day laborers yet they
give themselves to this work with a spirit
of enthusiasm that has no parallol
Never was a conference entertained
more delightfully than this has been by
the people of this charming little city

The call Is of peculiar Interest It is li
pnrt as follows In calling thts conven-
tion > our attention Is directed to the grase
situation wnlch confronts the toiling
masses of our country ln a land varied
In climate abounding In wealth all na-
ture smiling upon it with willing hind
we yet see hundreds of thousan Is of our
fellow human beings anxious to fashion
and produce wealth the necessities and
luxuries of life yet unable to Und an op-
portunity of being so employed
Never In the history of the world has
so large a nnmlier ot people vainly sought
foi nn opportunity to earn a livelihood
and contribute to the support of their
fellows In a society where such abnor-
mal conditions prevail there must of ne-
cessity be something wrong at the ba e
foundation and it requires but little study
to come to the conclusion that the owner-
ship nnd control of the wealth of the
means of production iiy private corpora-
tions which have no human sympathy or
apparent responsibility Is the cause or the
ills and wrongs borne by the human fam-
ily
The right to life liberty and the pursuit
of happiness should be a guarantee that
employment remunerative safe nnd
healthful Is accoided to all Wherever
these rlghta and guarantees are denied it
becomes those devoted to tho interests of
the people and the progress of our race
to take such action as will necessarily
make theae declarations actualities nn 1
tut mean n les phrures The forthcoming
convention will afford an excellent oppor-
tunity for tho wage woi Iters of our coun-
try who are more directly interested than
all others In the solution of the great prob-
lems confr luting our people to declare for
and to take such action as will erystallUe
develop and attain tho noble purposes of
our orcanxation
To protoat against tho violations ot law
tend to the omissions to enforce other lawn
enacted In the Interest of the tolling
masses to demand the passage of laws
protective and prosreiiHle In their char-
acter to weld the bonds of unity and fra-
ternity more firmly among the wageearn
ing classes of our country and to review
the events of the past year as well as to
profit by our expeiienee are among the
matters which will nccesmrlly come before
