A Simple Story Befinninf in Texas Twenty-five Years A*o
By Louella Styles Vincent
' Chapter One, Continued
walnut, scrub oaks sturdily re-
fusing to bend with a weight
of acorns, and luxuriant grape-
vines of several varieties forming
myriad bowers wherever on moun-
tain side or gulley rim they could
gain a foothold. Four miles from
the enraptured beholders, wound
the river “tember” as far as eye
could reach—with its huge cot-
tonwoods and pecans towering
above oaks, blackjack, hackber-
ries, walnuts, black haws, wild
chinas, sycamores, plums and
dog wood, and vieing with count-
less magnificent broad-branched
elms. Twenty miles further
was a parallel ribbon of rich river
forest appearing almost as long
as that nearer.
Between the mountains and
the river were wonderful
meadows in which grazed many
cattle shut in or out by seeming-
ly endless fences of barbed wire,
and dotted far apart were tiny
homes from which curled the
smoke which precedes the even-
ing meal.
Three miles away, towards the
river, could be seen the little vil-
lage of Lissville nestling in the
protection of lovely green wood-
lands. Squire Bivrock explain-
ed that the flaming reflection of
of common sense unselfishness, the setting sun was on the school
tt, i i „ house windows, and the strang-
annoy traveling companions by
complaints nor sullenness.
Squire Bivrock’s respect for
the McDonalds was increased
hourly by theirpatientendurance
and unflagging cheerfulness, and
also by their considerate efforts
to ameliorate the condition of
dumb pets which they had un-
wittingly placed in such extreme
discomfort

Several times the wagon in the
distance became visible between
green of earth and blue of sky,
then, without coming closer,
sank out of sight.
The worn-out travellers cheer-
ed each other as best they could
while the horses plodded heavily
through unending beauty, bril-
liancy and variety of flowers
which continued to surprise and
delight through long hours of
heat, glare, and weariness.

an unfailing test of culture but
