ANGELINA AND SURROUNDING
COUNTIES IN TEXAS
by Delroy York
Hello everyone from Lufkin and all
of East Texas. Our weather is slight-
ly changed since I last spoke to you
through this media, but our singings
haven't changed at all — unless they
are better!
The first Sunday in September and
Saturday night before Elbert Perkins
directed the Jasper County Conven-
tion in Roganville. Elbert is a very
good convention president and proved
it with this convention. The weather
was HOT but everyone did their best.
All of the usual East Texas singing
group was there, together with a
couple of quartets, and everyone en-
joyed the convention immensely.
The following Saturday night, Carl
Lindsey's Round Robin Convention
met in West Lavelle Baptist Church
in Kirbyville. Carl's quartet, The
Gospeltones, were there and presented
their usual inspiration in gospel song.
Jess and Jackie Harper, Barbara and
I attended and we really enjoyed it.
It is always a pleasure to be in a
singing with Carl, as he is one of the
most inspiring persons in gospel mu-
sic today.
The fourth weekend in September
the Harpers and I went in opposite
directions. Jess is the Vice President
of the Angelina County Convention,
and he and Jackie attended the Yel-
lowpine Homecoming and Sabine
County Convention near Hemphill. M.
J. Rice was in charge and they report
the usual outstanding convention
there. Frank Stamps and Romy Gris-
som were there; also the Singing Bell
Family of Temple and Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Arnold of Jefferson.
At the same time, yours truly, with
two of the daughters, attended the
Bowie County Convention at Hub-
bard's Chapel near DeKalb. That's a
good trip but we really enjoyed the
day with Mr. and Mrs. Lee 0. Chas-
teen and Mary Lou. This is the first
time I've had the privilege of attend-
ing, but it was outstanding. Especial-
ly did we enjoy the Stamps Office
Quartet. Of course, they still have
the old standbys — Jimmie Grisham
and Billy Porter — but it is good to
see the youngsters in the quartet:
^ur own East Texas native, “Red"
McLain, Alfred Matthews, Jr., and
our old friend “Butch" Williams.
Butch is a one man show, but you
have to see it to believe it. We look
forward to having them with us in
Angelina County next February. I
saw many other old friends, including
J. T. Williams of Dallas, Charley Ed-
monds and others from Arkansas, and
J. Lawrence Deavers, our old friend
from Snyder, Texas, who wrote the
very beautiful song “Heaven's Har-
Page (4)
mony." Also glad to see the Cagle
Family from Winona, Texas, and to
meet J. C. Rogers and the Rogers
Rangers from Texarkana.
The fifth Sunday in September the
Hardin County Convention met in the
Assembly of God Church in Honey
Island. H. W. Ener conducted his first
convention as the new president ahd
did a good job. Class singing was es-
pecially good. Mrs. Clarence Mc-
Adams, Mr. Perry Ricks, and three of
the daughters made this trip with me.
Remember the next Angelina Coun-
ty Convention, which meets in Con-
cord Baptist Church, on Highway 63,
five miles East of Zavalla. The dates
are November 10 and 11. We expect
another good convention. Also mark
February 9 and 10 on your calendar,
for those are the dates of the big-
gest Angelina County Convention.
Come to see us.

Greetings to all singing friends.
Another summer has come and gone
and our fall and winter conventions
have begun.
The first Sunday in September we
attended the Travis County Conven-
tion, which met at the River Road
Baptist Church out from Austin, Tex-
as, and it was a dandy. Mr. Bevil was
the emcee and he is one of the best.
It was good to see many friends, in-
cluding Mr. and Mrs. Harris, Mr. and
Mrs. W. B. Bell and Mr. Rip Collins
from San Antonio. When this group
is present you can always have a
good convention. Mr. Arthur Watson
from Dallas was there. You just can't
find a better convention man than
Mr. Watson.
October, 1962
The second Sunday we drove to
Cold Corner Baptist Church near Hub-
bard. The singing wasn't up to par,
but we enjoyed seeing many good
friends. Mr. Bob Arnold and Mr.
Dwight Brock were there and we
were glad to see them again.
The third Sunday we drove to Gold-
thwaite for an all day convention.
We've never heard such wonderful
singing as we heard there. This was
our first trip to that county and most
everyone was strangers to us, but
the way they welcomed us with a
friendly hello and howdy, we were
not strangers long. Mr. Glenn Nichols
was the emcee and he can't be beat.
He kept the singing going in high all
day, and, as Mr. Burl Carter says,
“It was carried on East Texas style!”
No selfishness . . . just everyone
helping each other. We attend a lot
of big conventions and most every-
where we go the people are going for
the group singing, which, in our opin-
ion, shows brotherly love among the
directors. Mrs. Lucy Sims of Clovis,
New Mexico was there and it was
nice to see her again.
The fourth Sunday in September
was our convention date in Waco. We
were so glad to have our friends Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Huggins and Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard Sikes from Brownwood,
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Nichols of Gold
thwaite, Mr. and Mrs. Wolf of Madi-
sonville, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Robbins
and party of Fort Worth, Mr. and
Mrs. James Boyd and Mr. and Mrs.
Troy Jones of Gatesville, Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Derr and Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Mathews of Hillsboro, Mr. and Mrs.
Nobel Bevil, Mr. and Mrs. L. M.
Kelly, Miss Bess Barnett and a group
of others from Austin, also Mr. John-
son of Galveston. Our thanks to each
and every one. Without you our con-
vention would not have been a suc-
cess.
Until next time, let's all keep our
gospel singing going.
