CUMBY
TEXAS.
Williams for Governor.
An enthusiastic endorsement
from Dallas county.
Hoo. R. R. Williams,
Cumby, Texas.
My dear friend “Democratic
^ob:”
I am glad to know you are in
the race for Governor. I came
from Virginia forty years ago,
after having followed Stonewall
Jackson through the late un-
pleasantness in his old brigade,
Fourth V. Regiment. I have not
had the opportunity but once or
twice since I have been in Texas
of voting for a man who I believe
would serve the best interests of
the people of Texas and making
-a governor that all the people
would be proud of.
I supported Campbell heartily
for governor in Dallas County
thought he would make a good
.governor, but he has made a
most complete failure. The time
that Wynne, Crane and Sayers
ran for governor I was urging
Crane to make the race at that
time, being a strong Campbell
man I had a talk with that great
and good man, Gov. Hogg. He
told me that Campbell was a
good man, and he had played
with him when he was a boy, and
he said then that the objections
to Campbell was that he would
never dig up a stump, but always
went around it.
Now Friend Bob, I feel satis-
fied in my own mind, and from
what I can learn that yon will be
the next governor of Texas. I
| will leave no stones unturned so
: far as my vote and influence go
in urging your claims for gover-
nor. You will doubtless recol-
lect that I held an office in the
Senate in the 27th Legislature
when you were a member of the
Lower body. I watched you
very closely and I have found
you correct on all questions
pertaining to the best interests in
my judgement to all of the people
/of Texas, and it was a good
; clean record that you made in
the 27th Legislature that stim-
ulates me to support you for
governor, and if every man in
- Texas knew you as well as I do
Campbell would hardly be known
in the race. I feel confident that
you will carry Dallas County 1500
or 2000 majority over Campbell.
I would like to hear from you by
return mail, and if there is. any
suggestion you have to make to
me in your interest in your can-
didacy I will take great pleasure
in attending to it.
I know your war record, but
would like for you to write me to
give me your regiment, company
and brigade that you served in.
It is a well known fact to every
old Confederate, so far as I know
that no braver man than yourself
ever unsheathed a sword on the
battlefield for what we conceived
to be a principle......................-if the
people will just get around and
turn out and vote and elect you
governor I am satisfied that we
will have a leader that the people
throughout Texas will be proud
of.
I am yours to command.
Y. F. Pace.
TEMPLE BUDGET
Williams in Bell County.
Temple, ’lexas, June 9.—(Spe-
cial.)—Hon. R. R. Williams, who
has announced for the nomina-
tion for governor, will receive a
great many more votes in this
section than the circumstances
would seem to warrant. Gov-
ernor Campbell does not enjoy
any great amount of popularity
in Bell county where there is a
widespread feeling that the laws
which he advocated and for the
passage of which he is largely
responsible are detrimental to
the best interests of the state.
Bell county, in its present con-
dition, is undoubtedly a strong-
hold of the idea of “fewer laws;
better laws.” Many Democrats
whose loyalty to the party can-
not be questioned openly avow'
their intentions of supporting
the candidacy of Mr. Williams.
They will go further than this
they say and do ail within their
power to secure votes for him
by organizing the county and
acquainting the voters with his
platform. It seems to be the
opinion of many Democrats in
Bell county that Mr. Williams
will prove to be a second Brown
of Georgia.
From Ellis County.
Waxahachie, Texas, June 9.—
(Special) That an effort will be
made to carry Ellis county for
Hon. R. R. Williams for govern-
er in the July primary became
quite apparent today when farm-
ers who came here to appear
before the board of equalization
openly avowed that they would
vote for the Hopkins county
mao,
People of Cumby
In Mass Meeting Indorse
Hon. R. R. Williams
For Governor.
At an enthusiastic mass meeting of our citizens last
night the following resolutions were unanimously adopted
and rousing speeches and pledges made to push the cam-
paign to a successful issue. A Williams Club was organi-
zed an a committee appointed to push the organization in
every portion of the state.
A. H. Berry, Chairman.
Levi I. Mercer, Secretary.
W. O. Willingham, Assistant Secretary.
Executive Committee: Levi I. Mercer. A. H. Berry and
C. A. Bridges.
We, the people ot Cumby and
vicinity, friends and neighbors of
Hon. R. R. Williams, candidate
for governor of Texas, take this
method of expressing our confi-
dence iu his ability and integrity
as a man and Christian gentleman
and a man in every way worthy
of the support of the voters iu
the democratic primary.
We have known him intimately
for years and have intrusted him
with positions af honor and re-
sponsibility, and he has made
good in every position to which
he has been called.
As a citizen and friend, as aa
official, as a staunch party man,
he has been faithful to every
trust, and we can assure the vo-
ters of Texas that should he be
elected governor the plain people
would have a leader ever faithful
to their interests and a champion
of their rights.
We enthusiastically indorse his
candidacy in every particular and
ask for a saner and less inquisi£
torial administration of stata
affairs in Texas. t
