Gridsters end season
on 'good foot’
For the second straight year the
Trojanettes advanced as far as the
region level in the volleyball
playoffs in Brenhatn. Nov. 22.
After beating Madisonville. the
Trojanettes went to Brenham for
the Regional Tournament where
their neat opponent was Kountze
a team which has advanced to
state for several years.
were very disappointed
our performance against
high we could not hear
ourselves call for the ball. It was
very difficult to play under the
circumstances, but our team
pulled ‘ogether to win it.” said
Ms. Gilbert.
Madisonville looked stronger
this year but just could not
contain the powerful offense of
the Trojanettes. (Scores 13-10;
14-16: 15-4).
Seniors on the volleyball team
were Pam Young, Paula Young
and Melanie McCartney, all
captains on this year s bi-district
championship team.
"We will have three returning
letterwomen next year to help
defend our district title, and what
better three to have than Carol
Cernosek, Debbie Snokhous. and
Kaye Tucker.” said Ms. Gilbert.
"We
with
Kountze. After district, it just
takes one bad game to knock you
out of competition. We had a verv
good chance to win region this
year, but our one bad game came
at this time." said Ms. Jackie
Gilbert, coach. Kountze won both
games 15-5: 15-10.
In the bi- district competition
Nov. 17. Carol Cernosek came
through again this year against
Madisonville with her serves
while Paula Young coordinated
the defense and made numerous
outstanding saves to keep the
team's hopes alive. The Mus-
tangettes could not stop the
spikes of Pam Young and Melanie
McCartney, which were made
possible by the near perfect sets
of Debbie Snokhous. Kaye Tucker
again proved to be accurate with
her deep placements which kept
Madisonville completely off
guard.

Troians open season
on winning note
Beginning their campaign for a
second straight district basketball
title. Coach James Schuetz's
Trojans are standing with a 1-1
record after the opening games.
Though he has only one
returning starter from last year’s
district champs. Coach Schuetz
has molded a fine team which will
enter the Robinson Tournament,
where the Trojans will banle the
Marlin Bulldogs at 8:30 p.m.
today.
Senior Mark Sullivan appears
to be the heart of the Trojan team
as he pumped in 30 of West's 58
points in a 58-54 win over
Midway. Spark plug Peter Hardin
found time amid his great ball
handling to score 12 points in the
initial victory.
In their second game Dec. 1 in
West, the Trojans lost to the
Connally Cadets by the score of
58-47. Sullivan had 16 points and
freshman Reggie Vonner had 13
in the game.
Tommy Piscacek and David
Peters have played well for the
Trojans as have Bob Ballew and
Ronny G. Harris, after coming off
the bench in both games.
Weighlifters to show muscles
West's weighlifters are train-
ing for a powerlifting meet Jan.
10 in Victoria. Ever since Nov. 18.
11 male athletes have been
working with weights to keep
themselves in shape for the 1976
football season.
Men training from last season
are Coach B.J. Korenek. Charles
Kubacak. Danny Mynarcik. Ricky
Su’ak. Tommy Bartosh, and Miles
Adamson. New members who
plan to participate this year are
David Scott. Graylyne Griffin.
Richard Griffin. David Mynarcik
and Craig Lott.
The weightlifters follow a
specific planned workout each
week. The purpose of the plan is
to give the tom down muscles a
chance to rebuild and form as the
week progresses. Each day the
athletes put in hard hours to
prepare their muscles for the
meet by doing squats, benchpress
work, armwork. and deadlifting.
Ending the season with a 4-1
district mark and 7-3 season
record, the West Trojans varsity
football team was awesome in
'75. better in many areas
statistically than the '74 bi-dist-
rict champs.
The Trojan offense averaged
322 yards a game, pounding out
288 on the ground each outing.
West averaged 24 points a game
while allowing only 7.
Trojan runners rammed the
ball at and over opponents for a
total of 2883 rushing vards
throughout the season.
Tommy Bartosh led the Trojan
attack, running for 1.172 yards to
become the Trojans' first 1000-
yard gainer in decades. Bartosh
averaged five yards in only three
games. The Trojans lost all three
games. Bartosh also led the team
in scoring with 76 points.
Other Trojans were not going to
let Bartosh solo though. Reggie
Vonner gained 654 yards at a
five-yard per carry clip, proving
to be the best freshman in the
district. Vonner was the Trojans’
Trojanettes to face Hubbard In tourney
Going into their own tourna-
ment. the Trojanette varsity
basketball team will try to
improve a somewhat disappoint-
ing 2-3 record. The tournament
will feature West and Hubbard in
a 4 p.m. game today with Aquilla
and Travis squaring off at 5:30.
The West *'B' team will play
Hamilton at 7 p.m.. and the
Midway "B" team will play last
year's runner-up Mart Panther-
ettes in completing the first day
action at 8:30 p.m.
After opening the season with
two victories, the Trojanette
varsity fell upon bad times as they
have lost their last three games.
Melanie McCartney led the
Trojanettes to their first win Nov.
17 by scoring 35 points against
the Aquilla defense. Paula Young
added 23 points in the 65-48
victory. Aquilla gained revenge
though by dropping the Trojanet-
tes Nov. 24 by the score of 61-60.
In the Trojanettes’ best game
of the season, the girls from West
defeated a Jefferson-Moore team
116-13. Nov. 18. Melanie scored
41 points but had to take second
chair to towering Carol Cernosek,
who scored 50 points that night.
The last two games have been
against the Midway Pantherettes.
probably the best AAA team in
Texas. A rush of turnovers hurt
the Trojanettes as they dropped

were Kyle Heitmiller with 50
yards, extra point specialist Peter
Hardin with 43 yards and
Graylyne Griffin with 25. Greg
Melasky, who showed fine
aggresive play on special teams,
also carried the ball.
Even though they were not at
superstar status, David Peters.
Blane Busby. Raymond Kolar,
Tommy Piscacek, and Sam
Zahirniak were valuable to the
Trojans.
Defensively, Big Red was no
less overpowering than the
offense. The defensive platoon
recorded six shutouts and allowed
an average of only 6.7 points a
game.
Led by Charles Kubacak, Rickv
Sulak, Richard Glomb. John
Miller. Kenny Hill, and Kyle
Heitmiller. the defense held the
opposition to only 105 rushing
yards a game.
Miles "Pee Wee” Adamson.
David Scott. Griffin. Sullivan,
Vonner, and Bartosh also helped
contain the run as well as
providing a pass coverage which
held opponents to 49 yards a
game.
