who bring to people in West and
surrounding areas every Sunday
a variety of Czech polkas and
waltzes recorded by Czech
artists in America. "I feel that
the show is valuable to both
Czech listeners and other
interested listeners; it allows
them an hour and a half of good
Czech music in 'correst Czech'
explains Sefcik. Both Sefcik and
his wife, Mrs. Maxine Sefcik,
and David Kolar speak fluent
Czech.

Sefciks have a "library” of
about 300 Czech albums that
School Board
Meeting Held
The American-Czech Hour is,
done live, at KHBR in Hillsboro,
whenever possible. However,
Sefcik, who is Editor of the
SPJST Vestnik, has other
responsibilities and must attend
many SPJST out-of-town local,
district, and state activities on
Sundays. When a conflict
occurs, the show is taped. David
has the recording equipment in
his home.
The show has a standard
beginning, and even a theme
song, “Good Morning Polka.”
David begins in Czech by
introducing the show and its
host, Rudy Sefcik. David learn-
ed to speak Czech from his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Matus, when he was
young and has no trouble with
the program. He and Sefcik
introduce numbers in English
and Czech, to all listerners.
Mrs. Sefcik is responsible for
the order of the program and
Small Grain
Production
Meeting Slated
McLennan County Small
Grain Producers are encouraged
to attend a one night education-
al meeting on small grain
production, according to Billy
Collier, County Extension Ag-
ent. The meeting will be held
August 20th, 8 p.m. in the
Meeting Room, First National
Bank, McGregor. The meeting
is open to the public.
Dr. John Chapin, Area
Agronomist. Extension Service,
Stephenville will discuss "Fer-
tilizer needs for Maximum
Production of Small Grains in
the Blacklands”. Dr. Chapin
will also discuss the current
fertilizer situation.
Mr. R.J. Hodges, Extension
Agronomist, will discuss "Oats,
Wheat and Barley for the
Blacklands". Current research
information on small grain
production in the Blacklands
will be presented by Mr.
Hodges.
The West School Board met in
regular monthly session, Aug-
ust 6th. Mr. B.F. Sulak, tax
assessor for the district, gave
the board a report on the work of
the tax equalization board and
informed the board that the
equalization board will be in
session August 19, 20, and 21,
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at West
High School for the purpose of
hearing property owners who
have questions concerning their
assessments.
The board opened bids for
bakery and dairy products and
accepted low bids from Rainbo
Bakers for breads, Pure Milk
Company for milk, and Borden’s
for ice cream. The school day
time schedule was revised
setting the beginning of the
school day at 8:30 a.m. and the
closing of the day at 3:30 p.m.
for elementary schools and 3:40
p.m. for West High School.
Revisions in school policies
were studied and approved. The
feasibility of continuing the
practice of providing after
school transportation for certain
students involved in special
activities was discussed and
approval was given for the
continuance of this practice.
In cooperation with other
districts in McLennan County
approval was given for the
contribution of S200 per bus to
the McLennan County School
Transportation System to off-set
operating deficits caused by the
out dated State formula for
allocating funds for school bus
operation. A proposal from The
West News to print the West
High newspaper, The Trojan
Tattler, was studied and
accepted.
Adjustments were made in
the salaries of some special
personnel to bring them in line
with the 1974-75 State salary
schedule for teachers. The
preliminary budget for 1974-75
was studied and discussed. It
was noted that the estimated
expenditures will total S701,000.

the expenditures for 1973-74,
however, examination of expen-
ditures for the coming year
shows that approximatlely 14%
of this increase is due to salary
increases required by the new
State salary schedule for 1974-
75. No formal action was taken
on the budget pending comple-

Lichnovsky's Super Save,
Flowers ‘N’ Things, Bush
Drive-in, Community Grocery,
and SPJST Lodges 6 (Cotton-
wood), 54 (West) and 66 (Linden
Hall) and the SPJST Society.
Some of the 'most popular
bands within the state include
the Vrazel Polka Band, Jodie
Mikula, the Hi-Toppers, Texas
Dutchmen, Harold Strand, and
Johnny Mensik. Most of the
good bands come from Nebra-
ska and include Al Grebnick,
Ernie Kucera, Six Fat Dutch-
men. Roman Rezac and Frankie
Remar.
The American-Czech Hour
began at KHBR June 21, of 1971
(Father’s Day) when David
O’Brien hosted the program
with Sefcik, who had recently
moved to West from Houston to
become Editor of the Vestnik. In
Houston, Sefcik had been doing
a half hour American-Czech
hour five days a week with
KLEE radio station. When
David O'Brien left KHBR,
David Kolar and Sefcik continu-
ed with the Czech program.
The program is aired every
Sunday from 1:30-3:00 at 1560
AM or 102.5 FM.

For Gholson
Fun Night
Gholson Fun Night is set for
Saturday, August 17.
The kitchen will open at 6
p.m. Hamburgers, sandwiches,
home-made pies and other
goodies will be available.
Activities include a hay ride,
dunkin’ booth with live
dummies and other games.
Everyone is invited to attend.

City of Lerpy To Hold
First Major Elections

The newly incorporated City
of Leroy will hold its first major
election for mayor and city
councilmen's positions on Aug-
ust 17.

Svrcek to Serve State KJT
Mr. Cyrill Svrcek of West was
elected state vice-president of
the Czech Catholic Union of
Texas (the KJT) at the recent
XXXIst Convention of the Union
held in Austin. .
Upon the death of I.C. Parma,
Mr. Svrcek assuhred the office
of state president and spent
many hours traveling through-
out Texas.
"The XXXIst Convention upon
action ot the delegates, voted to
make the office of president a
full-time position with offices at
the home office in LaGrange.
During the election, Adolph
Adamcik of Society III in Dallas
nominated Mr. Svrcek for a full
term and this was endorsed by
delegate, Robert Doskocil. So-
qlfy 109, Hillsboro. Br. Svrcek
thanked the delegated for the
hfcnor and their confidence but
asked that his name be
withdrawn from consideration.
With no other candidates
offered for nomination, Mr.
Svrcek was elected state vice-
president by a vote of acclama-
tion and received a standing
ovation upon his acceptance.
Mr. Svrcek has spent many
years as a local officer of St.
Joseph Society 31. District V,
and as a state officer; director,
vice-president and president,
within his jurisdiction in KJT
District V which is among the
largest and most active districts
in the state. District V also has
the distinction of having 4
societies among the largest
within the state: West, Ennis,
Dallas and Abbott.
Mr. Svrcek will serve as state
vice-president until the XXXII
Convention to be held in Austin.

Harold Smith
Harold Smith of Waco has
been named district customer
service supervisor for Texas
Power & Light Company in
Hillsboro, Larry G. Mims, TP&L
district manager, announced.
Smith succeeds Early F.
Jacoby, who was customer
service supervisor in Hillsboro
until his death July 19, 1974.
Smith, division heating and
lighting specialist in Waco since
1973 joined TP&L in 1968 as a
service representative in Corsi-
cana.
A native of Sherman, Texas,
Smith is married to the former
Sandy Ferriel of Arlington and
the couple has two sons, Randy,
11 and Rodney, 12. The family is
a member of the Church of
Christ.
The Smiths’ will be moving to
Hillsboro shortly.
State KJT
Honors Kasberg
At the recent convention of
the Czech Catholic Union of
Texas, (KJT) in Houston, the
delegates honored Mr. Arnold
Kasberg, Jr. of St. Marlin's
parish in Tours for his outstand-
ing achievement of being a ten
gallon donor in the blood
program.
State vice-president Jerry
Sliva presented the following
resolution on behalf of the
Resolution Committee:
“Resolved that we give
special recognition to our
brother Arnold Kasberg, mem-
ber of Saint John Ncpomucene
Society No. 60 of Tours. Texas
for raising and donating 10
gallons to the blood bank in
McLennan County for relieving
the man and suffering of many
by a generous donation of
blood."

Tours and active in the activities

Leroy's first city marshall
will be appointed by the new
mayor and considered for
approval by the city council.
Leroy was incorporated on
June 22 in an election called by
county judge Bob Thomas. The
new town occupies an area of
roughly two square miles and is
inhabited by approximately 220

Adult Education
Classes Resume
The adult education class
sponsored by McLennan Com-
munity College on the West
High School campus has resum-
ed meeting at its regular hours
for the fall term. The class is
composed of adults who do not
have a high school diploma (or
its equivalent) and who wish to
learn either basic skills, such as
reading, writing, or mathema-
tics, or who want to prepare for
the General Educational Devel-
opment (high school equival-
ency) test.
Instructor Don Jares states,

enrolling in the class are

7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in room 5 of
the West High School main
building.

Mr. Albert Vrana was admitt-
ed to the Veterans Hospital in
Temple, Monday August 12, for
treatment and minor surgery.
He will be there for several
weeks.
Registration
Set For HJC
The class schedule and the
registration schedule for the
1974 Fall Semester has been
released by the Registrar and
Director of Admissions, Louis
N. Allen.
Registration will be according
to high school attended and by
towns and communities.
Registration for West stu-
dents will be August 23, 1974,
between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. in
the Adminstation Building.
Registration for other McLen-
nan County students will also be
August 23. 19JI4, between 8:30
and 11:30 a.m. in the Admins-
tration Buidling.
Gasses will begin September
3. 1974.
Night class registration will
be September 3. 1974, begin-
ning at 6:30 p.m. in the
Adminstration Building.
Mr. Allen states that anyone
interested in attending Hill
Junior College should contact
the Office of Registrar. Items
necessary for registration in-
clude the transcript from the
school or college previously
attended, completed application
and immunization certificate
signed by a doctor.
