Council would acknowledge hav-
ing started the movement. The
promoters said they started it.
At any rate the Council decid-
ed to take a straw vote among
the business people of the town
to ascertain the reaction of that
group. The bunch of young men,,
representing the Junior Chamber
of Commerce undertook that
survey and at the Council meet-
ing on June 1, this ballot was
showed seventy-five ballots FOR
the meter installation and forty-
three AGAINST.
It was previously agreed by
the Council that if that straw
ballot showed favorablly that an
election would be had by straw
vote on^Saturday June 13. I do
not know how this test will be
taken, neither do I know how, or
in what manner, the Council will
pass the enabling ordinance for
the enforcement of the rule if
it carries. This second straw bal-
lot will be open to anyone in
this community whether they
live in Bowie or not. '
We are told that if we put in
the meters it will bring to the
city lots of money, and if it does
the people who come to Bowie
and used the meters will pay for
this large sum of money which
which we promised.
As I am City attorney and will
be one of the enforcing officers
if the meters are put in and do
not get into your minds that I
Will not enforce the law to the
extent of my ability.
At the same time I am very
much opposed to the idea and
believe that we should let well
enough alone.
Our town is getting along very
well under the present arrange-
ment and: from personal exper-
ience I know that there is rarely
a time when a person cannot
pagjt his car, at least within two
blocks of the City post-office,
and most of the time it can be
done within one block. At times,
t,o be sure, you may not be able
to park your car just where you
want it.
A reliable citizen has this day,
Tuesday June 2, made three sur-
veys with references to vacant
spaces for parking on one of the
most used streets in Bowie. The
established on its own lot where
the meters cannot get to it, at
least at that time you will see
this down-town section shrivel
up, buildings vacant and all such
qiatters.
I-would like to write more but
this is probably enough.
Yours very truly,-
J. W. Chancellor.
