Federation
First Shalom Baby/Pediatric CPR class a huge success
CPR participants Joyce Wilkenfeld and Rebecca Weiner practice compression
techniques on infant models.
The Jewish Federation of Greater
Houston’s Shalom Baby program
held its first CPR training course
on Thursday, Jan. 26, teaching
techniques for infant, child and
adult care in the Evelyn Rubenstein
Jewish Community Center
auditorium.
Shalom Baby co-chairs Deborah
Rose and Robyn Goldstein were
pleased to be part of the sold-out
event. Thirty attendees included
parents, grandparents, friends
of parents and teachers. Each
participant received a certificate
from the American Heart
Association, which remains valid
for two years.
“CPR training is extremely
important because you never know
when a life-threatening situation
will arise,” Rose said. “Hopefully,
you won’t ever have to use it, but the
techniques that we learned today
taught me and many other parents
how to respond to the situation.”
Goldstein added, “This is such
a wonderful program for the
community. The lessons learned
today could potentially save many
lives in the future.”
Attendees were separated into
two groups, with instructors Gail
Gould and James Kindel assisting
each one. Participants practiced
on model babies and adults. One
technique covered is “C.A.B.” - an
acronym for compression, airways
and breathing.
Rose said she chaired the event
because, “I knew how important it
was for parents of young children
to learn the lifesaving technique.
I have young children, and a lot of
my friends, who have a family, have
been asking about how they can do
something like this.”
The Shalom Baby program
began in fall 2008, as a way for the
Federation to welcome the newest
members of the community. The
program offers play-date events
several times each year, where
parents of young children can get
together for a morning of socializing
with a Jewish component.
Due to popular demand, the
Federation plans to hold a second
CPR training event in the near
future.
