DEPUTY GRAND MATRON VISITS LOCAL
EASTERN STAR CHAPTER TUESDAY NITE
Tuesday evening, February 15,
Palacios Chapter No. 125, Order of
the Eastern Star was honored with
the official visit of the Deputy
Grand Matron, Mrs. Gladys Alcorn,
of Boling. She was accompanied by
Mrs. Bessie Hall, a Grand Repre-
sentative from Wharton.
Preceding the meeting, a banquet
was held at the Green Lantern Inn.
After the banquet, all went to tie
Masonic Hall for the meeting. The
hall was decorated with the Valen-
tine theme with large red hearts

Demonstration Club
The Palacios Home Demonstra-
tion Club will meet with Mrs. I. E.
Ramsey Friday, February 18 at
2:30 p.m. Everyone is urged to at-
tend and visitors are always wel-
come.
Every one interested in decorat-
ing a cake, bring a frosted cake.
The ornamental frosting will be
furnished by the club. The roll call

Accepts Presidency Of
Howard Payne College
BROWNWOOD, Feb. 10 —Dr.
Guy D. Newman of Waco has re-
signed as promotional vice presi
dent of Baylor University to accept
the presidency of Howard Payne
College, effective June 1.
Dr. Thomas H. Taylor, president
of Howard Payne since 1929, wil’
retire July 1 after 25 years a?
president of the senior Baptist
college. He has been a member of
the Howard Payne faculty for
nearly 50 years.
Dr. Newman was elected presi-
dent of Howard Payne Tuesday
night, February 8, at a called
meeting of the college’s board of
trustees at Hotel Brownwood. Dr.
O. H. Chandler of Ballinger is
chairman of the board.
As vice president of Baylor, Dr
Newman has headed that institu-
tion’s $50,000,000 10-year expan-
sion program.
The HPC board of trustees
unanimously accepted proposals
made by Dr. Newman in connec-
tion with his acceptance of the
presidency. These included:
1. Plans for the near future in
which the college will enter upon
a 10-year program to raise $5,000,-
000 for capital improvements and
endowment.
2. Reactivation of the program,
launched several years ago regard-
ing construction of an athletic
stadium at a site acquired by the
return to Baylor University where
he had formerly served as assistant
to Baylor President W. R. White.
He is a graduate of Baylor and of
Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary.
