drive” prose of our inestimable

Texan.

than the sword — but must
come out second in a contest
with the surgeon’s scapel!
Mr. Gurwell underwent an
emergency appendectomy Mon-
day afternoon at St. Luke’s Hos-
pital and Tuesday moring con-
sented—under protest-to take
one week’s leave of absence from
OUR SIDE.

Turn Out To Honor
Insurance Board
Bellaire businessmen and
community leaders turned out
in force last Wednesday night
to honor officials of the State
Insurance Board at a barbecue
at the Bellaire Fire Station.
Honored guests were Judge
Penn J. Jackson, chairman of
the State Insurance Board. Ned
Price, member of the hoard,
and George Hawley, chief en-
gineer for the board.
City officials this week ex-
pressed appreciation to resi-
dents who turned out io wel-
come the visitors.
“Around 80 people attended
the barbecue and we feel that
kind of a turnout was a very
gratifying expression of com-
munity spirit,” Councilman
Robert Watts said.
He said the vistors were tak-
en on a tour of Bellaire’s fire
protection facilities and were
very impressed by what they
sawr. The insurance board is
responsible for setting the key
rate on which fire insurance
premiums paid by Bellaire pro-
perty owners are based.
Fire Damages

The Charles Celaya resident
at 524 S. Post Oak was damaged
by fire last Thursday morning.
Bellaire Fire Captain L. I.
Moody said the fire did extensive
damage tot he garage and that
there was smoke damage thro-
ughout the two story structure.
He said the fire apparently ori-
ginated near the hot water heat-
1 er in the garage.
Civic Women
Slate Second
Antique Fair
Last year members of the Bell-
aire Women’s Civic Club put a
great deal of work and ingenuity
into their First Antique Fair.
Their effort was so successful
that they’re planning a greatly
enlarged fair this year. Dates are
Nov. 4, 5 and 6 at the Bellaire
Community House, 300 South
Rice.
Mrs. M. S. Fellers, fair chair-
man, announced that 12 local an-
tique dealers and out-of-town
dealers from as far away as Ohio
will be represented. Anitque pur-
chases may be made at the fair.
An outstanding and varied as-
sortment of private collections
will be on display.
ANITQUE TOYS
A treat for the children will be
Mrs. Fellers’ display of anitque
toys. She will show a very old
miniature sleigh filled with dolls.
One of the most interesting will
be a tin doll with a painted face.
There will be china dolls dres-
sed in the fashion of their "era
and a number of very old wooden
toys including a wooden train
and a circus calliope. Several
iron toys will also be shown.
Mrs. Carroll Camden, 5309
Braeburn, will have an exhibit
of cut glass and a display of
soup tureens. Mrs. O. A. Itria,
5324 Pine, Mrs. Gary Summers,
5335 Braeburn, and Mrs. Earl
Lingo, 4923 Elm, will fill several
cases with art glass of all kinds.
Mrs. Robert Gay, 4817 Ever-
green, will display an old spool
chest, dough board and an unus-
ual glass lamp. She will also ex-
hibit a novelty item—a picture
made from cigar bands.
SPINNING WHEEL
Mrs. G. W. Weikel, 5202 Brae-
burn will be showing a spinning
wheel. Mrs. John McLaughlin,
4716 Braeburn. a doctor’s case
used in the War Between the
States. She is also showing Hit-
chcock chairs with the original
paint on them, an unusual desk
and a cathedral type shelf clock.
Mrs. Joel Williams, 103 Allen-
dale, has an interesting collec-
tion of iron candlesticks. Norman
Sartain, 8813 LuGary, will show
music boxes. Joe Fournace will
show old Victrolas and of interest
to the men and boys will be his
collection of swords and old guns.
Also of interest to the men will
be a matched set of wooden car-
penter’s planes shown by Kirk

Living Dails Re-Enacr Life of Parker School Namesake
This doll exhibit and painting, which won
first prize in the first annual Girl Scout Dol!
Fair last spring for Troop 906, has been
brought to life by the girls. This summer
they wrote and produced their own play on
the life of Cynthia Ann Parker, Texas heroine
who was captured by Indians at age 9 and
lived to return to civilization as an adult.
Tuesday the girls enacted their play at
Cynthia Ann Parker Elementary School for
the student body and made forma! presenta-
tion of their exhibit to the .school as a per-
manent symbol of its namesake. Here, in
their own self-made costumes, are Chief
Pahuaka, (Cathy Cole, 5305 Pine,) and
Cynthia Ann Parker (Judy Bishop, 4806 Hol-
ly. Troop leader is Mrs. Clyde Wlllbern, 712
N. Ave. A. and assistant is Mrs. E. W. Pan-
nell 804 N. Ave. A.
PAVING ASSESSMENTS
SET ON FOUR SKIPS
Assessment ordinances on pav-
ing projects totaling $9,182.92
were passed by Bellaire City
Council Monday night after four
paving hearings.
The proceedings were part of
a continuing city program of
gradually eliminating unpaved
skips in streets throughout the
city.

Plans Halloween
Party For Students
The Ann Keene Dance Studio
will hold its annual Halloween
party for ballroom students Tues-
day evening at the studio, 5505
Old Richmond Rd.
The party for sixth to eighth
graders will be from 6:30 to
8 p.m. and for junior high and
high school age students from 8
to 9:30 p.m.
Prizes for the best costumes,
plus other prizes will be award-
ed. There will also be games
and refreshments.

Asked Post Ponement
Eric Moore, 111 Cherrywood,
and Louis Stolz, 110 Cherrywood,
appeared before council to ask
that the paving adjacent to their
property be put off until spring.
“Wo already have a drag strip
down Pine as it is and smoothing
out that section will just make
it worse,” said Mr. Moore.
He also said tearing up the
yards to put in curbs during the
winter months would mean that
“we’ll have a mess all winter.
If the work were done in the
spring it would quickly be cov-
ered with grass.”
Mayor ProTem Robert Watts
explained that the city got a bet-
ter price on the paving skips by
awarding the contracts to one

Floating In
Drainage Ditch
Susan Spykerman, 2^-year-
old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene Spykerman, 5500 Holly,
had a narrow brush with death
Friday afternoon when she was
plucked from the Renwick drain-
age ditch near her home.
The youngster was found flo-
ating on the surface of the ditch
which contained about four feet
of water.
Mrs. Spykerman said she mis-
sed Susan and her four-year-old
son, Jimmy, and had just started
looking for them when Jimmy
came running toward the house
calling “Susie’s in the ditch.”
She said she pulled the child
from the water and worked with
her until Bellaire firemen arriv-
ed with emergency equipment.
The youngster was taken to
Texas Children’s Hospital and
help overnight for observation.
School Board
Candidates To
Speak At Rally
Candidates in the upcoming
Houston Independent School
District board election will be
invited to speak at a rally on
Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. at Congregation
Brith Shalom, 4301 Bellaire
The non-partisan rally is be-
ing sponsored by the Sisterhood
of Congregation Brith Shalom.
The public is invited to attend.
Mrs. Harold Sternlicht is pro-
gram chairman ofthe Sister hood.
The rally is being planned by the
Social Action Committee headed
by Mrs. Leonard Goldstein. The
committee consists of Mrs. Mic-
hael Brill, Mrs. Stanley Greiss,
Mrs. Ted Kanncr, Mrs. Kamal
Sheena and Mrs. Bernard Vine.
Women Of Ep:,phony To
Hear Talk On Politics
The Women of Epiphany will
have a program on “Women’s
Political Responsibilities” given
by Mrs. Eugene Hughes of the
League of Women Voters, on
Thursday, October 20 at 9:30 a.m.
at the church edifice, 7045

Becky Lawson
Injured In
Auto Crash
Becky Lawson, pretty Bellaire
high Schol sophomore, was in-
jured in an automobile accident
last Friday while enroute to the
Bellaire-Spring Branch Football
Game.
Becky, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Glenn E. Lawson, 4910 Va-
lerie, and winner of the 1960
Miss Bellaire Teen-Age Contest,
was admitted to Hermann Hos-
pital. She suffered lacerations
across the face.
Treated for cuts at Hermann
Hospital and released was Don
Copeland, 7118 Atwell, driver of
the car in which Becky was rid-
ing. Don plays football on Bell-
aire’s Junior Varsity team which
the previous evening had played
the Spring Branch Juniors.
Don’s mother, Mrs. A. Cope-
land Jr., said the accident occur-
red on Voss Rd. She said other
teen-age occupants of the car
were shaken up but uninjured.
