Girls still havin’ fun
H.G. Olsen Elementary School alumni from the 1960s and 70s gathered for an all girls reunion June 24-26, at the
Ousley home, 206 Church St. Led by Sylvia Ousley Buttler, the group toured their alma mater and ended in the
gym where Buttler blew a whistle and ‘told them to get running. Dorothy Turnbull was the only one who ran. The
rest were cracking up,’ Buttler said. Pictured are, back row, left to right B.K. Littleton Sain of Port Aransas, Vickki
Peterson Aulie of Tioga, Diane Farley Duzich of Galveston, Kathy Allen Walker of Spokane, Wash., Jan Woodley
of Wichita Falls, Buttler, Gay Whiteside Russey of Houston, Gayla Fisher Lawton of Port Aransas, Jackie Massey
Craven of Aransas Pass, Dorothy Turnbull Hill of Allen, Nona Farley Hendricks, Nancy Smith Teller and Roxy
Curry, all of Port Aransas. In the front row, same order, are Donna Whiteside Lewis, Dorothy Bromley Glenn and
Mary Ellen Cartwright Smithey, all of Aransas Pass; Laurie Kent of Rockport, Tootie Littleton Barnes and Barbara
Littleton Collins of Port Aransas; Brucette Kifer Beitz of Austin, Kathleen Kellett of Corpus Christi and Jo Lana
Turnbull Smith of Arkansas. So, if you wondered about the yard signs that said ‘Old Port A Hot Chics are in town,
baby!’ and ‘Hot Chics from Old Port A will party here today,’ you now know what they were about. This group is
planning an ‘all years reunion of Olsen Elementary students before the high school was built’ next year, probably
the third week of July, Buttler said. Not pictured are Vonnie Doris Tanner and Glenda Balentine of Port Aransas,
Joyce Reed Gray of Aransas Pass and Ginger Martin Grubbs of Dallas.

Coverage
You Can
Count On!
The Fourth of July, the birthday of
our great country, is right around the
comer. It is the marker and symbol of our
freedom. The founders of our country,
234 years ago, wanted to live in a place
where they were free from government,
free from tyranny and free to worship as
they pleased. We should thank God that
we live in this country.
We live in the land of the free and
home of the brave, but how free are
you? Jesus talked about freedom with
the religious leaders of the day. In John
8:31-36, New Living Translation, Jesus
said to the people who believed in Him,
“You are truly my disciples if you remain
faithful to my teachings, (32) and you
will know the truth, and the truth will set
you free.” (33)
“But we are descendants of Abraham,”
they said. “We have never been slaves to
anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be
set free’?” (34)
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth,
everyone who sins is a slave of sin. (35)
A slave is not a permanent member of
the family, but a son is part of the family
forever. (36) So if the Son sets you free,
you are truly free.”
We often correlate freedom with an
absence of tyranny. But there is another
kind of freedom that is available to ev-
eryone, no matter where one lives. This
freedom is the freedom that Jesus offers.
In the above passage from John 8, Jesus
was specifically speaking to the religious
leaders of the day who were famous
for outwardly following the minutia
of the Old Testa-
ment law...but
Jesus said that in-
wardly they were
like graves filled
with dead bones.
These religious
leaders did not
understand the
spirit of the law,
nor did they like
anyone who explained why the law
existed. Jesus said he came to fulfill
or, in other words, complete, the law.
After Jesus’ resurrection, the Old Testa-
ment law was no longer in effect. Jesus
introduced a new way of living - a life
of freedom.
Paul said, in Gal 5:1, NLT, So Christ
has truly set us free. Now make sure that
you stay free, and don’t get tied up again
in slavery to the law.
For most American believers 2000
years after Jesus’ resurrection, it is not
the law that most often enslaves us. It,
typically, is sin that we haven’t given to
God. Obvious sins such as alcoholism,
drug addiction, food addiction, sex ad-
diction, etc., get the most attention. These
can still enslave a believer.
Peter calls Satan a roaring lion seek-
ing someone to devour, so we know that
Satan hasn’t given up. Other freedom
stealers can be things that aren’t so obvi-
ous, such as money and debt, lying and
gossip and others.
Let me ask the question again, how
free are you? Have you invited the giver
of ultimate freedom, Jesus, into your life?
If not, then you will never experience
ultimate freedom. If you have, but you
have allowed Satan to take control of
certain areas of your life, then go back
to the one who gave you your freedom,
God. He wants you to be free!
William Campbell in the pastor at First
Baptist of Port Aransas.
